That no live electrical components or wiring are exposed during charging,
recovery or purging of the system ;
Continuity of grounding.
Repair of Sealed Components
ο
1) When repairing sealed components, all electrical supplies must be disconnected
from the equipment being worked on prior to any removal of sealed covers, etc. If it is
absolutely necessary to have electrical power to the equipment during maintenance,
a continuously operating form of leak detection shall be located at the most critical
point to warn of a potentially hazardous situation.
2) To ensure that work on electrical components does not alter the enclosure in such
a way as to affect the level of protection, special attention must be paid to certain
points. These include deterioration of cables, excessive number of connections,
terminals not conforming to original specifications, deterioration of seals, improper
installation of cable glands, etc.
Make sure the unit is mounted securely..
Ensure that seals or sealing materials have not degraded to the point where they are
no longer useful in preventing the ingress of flammable atmospheres. Replacement
parts must meet the manufacturer's specifications.
NOTE: The use of silicon sealants may impair the effectiveness of some types of leak
detection equipment. Intrinsically safe components do not need to be isolated before
working on them..
Repairing intrinsically safe components
ο
Do not apply any permanent inductive or capacitive load to the circuit without
ensuring that it will not exceed the permitted voltage and current for the equipment
being used.
Intrinsically safe components are the only ones that can be worked on under voltage
in the presence of a flammable atmosphere. The test equipment must be at the
correct power rating. Replace components only with parts specified by the
manufacturer. Other parts may cause ignition of refrigerant in the atmosphere due to
leakage.
Wiring
ο
Check that the wiring will not be subject to wear, corrosion, excessive pressure,
vibration, sharp edges, or any other adverse effect on the environment. Control also
considers the effects of aging or continuous vibration from sources such as
compressors or fans.
Detection of flammable refrigerants
ο
Under no circumstances should potential ignition sources be used in the search for or
detection of refrigerant leaks. A halide torch (or any other detector using an open
flame) should not be used.
Leak detection methods
ο
The following leak detection methods are considered acceptable for systems
containing flammable refrigerants.
Electronic leak detectors should be used to detect flammable refrigerants, but the
sensitivity may not be adequate or may require recalibration. (Detection equipment
