Activity Four:
Be a great communication partner
Your own communication skills will make a big difference in your
dog's learning. Here are some tips for achieving communication
success:
•
Slow down your rate of speech and simplify your words.
•
Keep the environment calm when you are teaching.
•
Set up your dog's buttons in an area where your dog is
comfortable and the buttons are easily accessible and
unlikely to be moved around.
•
Keep each button in the same location so your dog
doesn't have to keep relearning where each word is.
•
Be silent! When your dog is exploring her buttons or
using gestures to communicate, stay silent for at least 15
seconds to give your dog processing time.
•
Direct your dog's attention to the buttons by
pointing at them;
˚
tapping a button; and
˚
standing near a button.
˚
•
Respect your dog's voice.
•
Respond to all forms of your dog's communication.
