Specific Safety Instructions
If there is a risk of the workpiece bending and whipping round (this de-
•
pends on the lenght and cross-section of the material and on the speed)
or at insufficient stability of the machine a sufficient number of height-
adjustable supports (REMS Herkules) must be used.
Due to the degreasing effect of the cooling lubricants (thread-cutting
•
oils), an intensive skin contact has to be avoided. An appropriate skin
protector has to be applied.
Do not allow undiluted cooling lubricant to get into drainage, water sys-
•
tems or the soil. Remaining cooling lubricants have to be delivered to
specialized waste disposal companies. Disposal identity number for
mineral-based cooling lubricants 54401, for synthetic 54109.
Observe the special safety instructions applicable to the power unit.

Setting up
2.1.1. REMS 4"Automatic Die Head on REMS Tornado (all types)
(Fig. 2)
Take the tool holder off the REMS Tornado. Remount the oil tray
and chip trough. The two supporting rings (1) supplied already mo-
unted on the drive tube (2) are the same. On one side each has a
centring collar diameter 68 mm; on the other side each has a collar
64 mm in diameter. The 68 mm diameter centring collar is needed
for the REMS Tornado machines. The drive tube is centred in the
machine's chuck covers with the aid of the collars on the two sup-
porting rings. Inside at one end of the drive tube (2) there is a drive
pin. Make sure that the set screw (3) is screwed in the crosshole at
this end but not so far that it projects beyond the internal diameter
or it will not be possible to push the drive shaft (4) fully in. Both sup-
porting rings must be in contact with the chuck covers, and centred
in the chuck cover holes with the turned collars as described abo-
ve. Insert the slotted drive shaft (4) of the 4"Automatic Die Head in-
to the drive tube (2), and mount the unit by means of the support
casting (5) on the front support beam of the REMS Tornado (see
Fig.). Switch on the REMS Tornado to check whether the 4"Auto-
matic Die Head is driven. If it is not, then – with the REMS Tornado
running – push the unit further until the slot in the drive shaft is felt
to positively engage. Secure the drive shaft (4) by thightening the
set screw (3) on the right supporting ring.

Connect the cutting oil hose on the REMS Tornado to the suction
hose on the REMS 4"Automatic Die Head. Fit the feed lever (8) onto
the square-ended shaft projecting from the chuck (9). Lift the REMS
4"Automatic Die Head, and suspend the chip trough from the die
head support casting (5).
2.1.2. REMS 4"Automatic Die Head with REMS Amigo 2 power unit
(Fig. 3)
Place the REMS 4"Automatic Die Head on a workbench or the floor.
Unscrew and remove coolant tube (14). Push ring-shaped section
of support for 4"Automatic Die Head/Amigo 2 onto drive shaft (4)
and secure support with in hole in coolant tube with hex. screw. In-
sert 4"Automatic Die Head/Amigo 2 drive head into Amigo 2 (with
locking ring). Mount Amigo 2 in such a way that the guide on the
drive head is installed on the drive shaft (4) and the drive head fol-
lower is fully inserted into the slot in the drive shaft (4). If necessary,
turn the die holder (12) manually so that the drive head follower can
be inserted into the slot in the drive shaft (4). For thread cutting pur-
poses, set the REMS Amigo 2 to clockwise rotation. For guidance
on the latter, refer to the REMS Amigo 2 Operating Instructions.
2.1.3. REMS 4"Automatic Die Head on other manufacturers'
machines
The REMS 4"Automatic Die Head can be used on all pipe turning
machines. However, the drive tube (2) must be extended by scre-
wing in a 1
1
/
" diameter tube so that it can be clamped in both chucks.

For mounting instructions for the 4"Automatic Die Head see para
2.1.1.
2.2.
Thread cutting oil
Use only REMS thread-cutting oil. Perfect threading results, long
durability of dies as well as utmost preservation of the machine are
achieved.
REMS Spezial thread-cutting oil is highly alloyed and suitable for
cutting pipe and bolt threads of all types. In addition, it can be was-
hed off with water (officially approved). Mineral oil-based thread cut-
ting oils are not permitted to be used on drinking water supplies in
certain countries, e.g. Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In this
case, use REMS Sanitol which contains no mineral oil.
REMS Sanitol thread-cutting oil is free of mineral oil, synthetic,
completely watersoluble and has the lubricating qualities of mine-
ral oil. It can be applied for all pipe and bolt threads. It must be used
in Germany, Austria and Swizerland for drinking water supplies and
meets the official specifications required (DVGW approval no. DW-
0201AS2032; ÖVGW approval no. W 1.303; SVGW approval no.
7808-649).
Use all types of thread cutting oil undeluted!
2.3.
Material support
Long tubes and rods must be supported in the height-adjustable
REMS Herkules, which is equipped with steel balls allowing easy
movement of the pipes in all directions without tilting the material
support. If the REMS Tornado is secured to a work-bench, then you
can also use the bench-mounted REMS Herkules Y. The capacity
of both the REMS Herkules and the REMS Herkules Y is
3.
Operation
3.1.
Die head
The REMS 4"Automatic Die Head progressively opens during the
cutting operation so that it cuts tapered threads only. This conti-
nuous opening action allows perfect tapered threads to be produ-
ced with the 4"Automatic Die Head and drive unit on only light load.
A separate set of cutting dies is required for thread sizes 2
4" in each case.
Changing dies
Retract the chuck until it rests against pressure bolt (10). With the
machine switched off, push in the pressure bolt (10) on the front
guide arm (7), and use the feed lever (8) to move the chuck into its
extreme right-hand position. Change the cutting dies in this position.
The dies must be cleaned of all dirt and chips before inserting them
until they are felt to engage. Note the numbering of the cutting
dies(11) and of the die holders (12). Feed in the chuck until the
pressure bolt (10) is free.
