6.6 SERVICING THE MECHANICAL SEAL

Perform the procedure below to assemble and disassemble the mechanical seal.
1.
Remove the impeller (a) from the output of the shaft (b).
2.
Clean the surface of the mechanical seal (c) with a clean cloth. Check if the seal
is damaged, cracked or wear. If so, it is require to replace the mechanical seal; if
not, is no need. Press the mechanical seal and inspect if it is flexible. If not, then
clean carefully the debris inside the mechanical seal.
3.
Clean the sealing surface of the ceramic seal with a clean cloth. Check if the seal
is damaged, cracked or wear.
4.
Loosen the four bolts of the pump connecting the plate and take it off.
5.
Use a tool (d) to push out the mechanical seal from the back of the pump plate.
6.
Clean the water pump mechanical seal housing, and apply a thin layer of Loctite
515 Sealant (e) or any other quality grade O-ring lubricant will work on the surface
of the mechanical seal. Reinstall the mechanical seal on the housing, smooth
pressed into the end and ensure to avoid collision damage to the mechanical seal
face during the process.
7.
Use a screwdriver (f) to take off the damaged ceramic from the impeller, and
clean the hole.
8.
Lubricate with clean engine oil on the surface of the new ceramic seal and press
onto the impeller seal housing.
