In order to avoid collision with the structure or the ground, before we use a fall arrest system, we need make sure we have
enough fall clearance.
The illustrations as below are example of how to calculate fall clearance when using Energy Absorbing Lanyard (EN 355), Self-
Retractable Lanyard (EN 360) or Vertical Lifeline with Fall Arrester (EN 353-1 and EN 353-2).
Using the EAL will require a total fall clearance of approximately 6.5 m as measured from the anchorage point of lanyard to
the nearest obstruction below. The total fall clearance combines the sum of the length of the lanyard (1.8 m), the maximum
deceleration of the lanyard and harness (1.9 m), the average height from dorsal D-ring to worker's foot (1.8 m), and the safety
factor (1.0 m).
Using the SRL will require a total fall clearance of approximately 3.0 m as measured from the working level to the nearest
obstruction below. The total fall clearance combines the sum of the maximum allowable fall arrest distance (2.0m) and the
safety factor (1.0 m).
