4 Function of the filter

4.1

Use

Bestmax filter cartridges are used to decarbonise cold water so that it meets the legal requirements
for drinking water quality. They reduce the scale content and carbonate hardness of drinking wa-
ter, thus protecting catering equipment such as coffee machines, espresso machines, hot and cold
drink vending machines, steamers, combi steamers, ice cube machines from harmful limescale
deposits. What's more, the taste of food and the aroma of drinks are improved by removing
unpleasant odours and tastes, e.g. chlorine. Particles are also filtered out of the water.
4.2

Design

The natural water (A) flows to the filter cartridge (Fig. 2). In area (E), particles are removed by means
of a pre-filter while unpleasant odours and tastes, e.g. chorine, are removed by active carbon. The
water is then decarbonised by ion exchangers (F), treated with active carbon (G) and then filtered
(H).
Integrated into the filter system is the bypass setting mechanism, which prevents a specified
amount of the natural water from being decarbonised. This amount of water is only filtered by
active carbon (G) and the particle filters (H). In the outlet (D), the decarbonised water and the
bypass water merge again.
Depending on the hardness and usage of the natural water, setting a defined
amount of bypass water on the filter head supplies the connected appliance
with an optimal water quality.
A Natural water intake
B Bypass water flow
C Bypass setting on the filter head
D Filtered water outlet
E Pre-filtration (particle filter, active carbon)
F Decarbonisation by means of ion exchangers
G Active carbon filtration; also filters the bypass water
H Particle filtration; also filters the bypass water

5 Operating and safety instructions

This section provides an overview of all the important operating and safety aspects to ensure safe,
trouble-free operation. Despite every safety precaution having been taken, every product harbours
residual risks, especially if handled incorrectly. The warranty will only be valid if the instructions in
these installation and operating instructions are observed and followed.
5.1

Proper use

The filter system is used solely to decarbonise (reduce the limescale content of) cold water of
drinking water quality and to remove unpleasant odours, tastes and particles that can be contained
in drinking water. The filter is designed and constructed exclusively for its proper use described
within these instructions. Any other use is deemed improper.
I
WARNING!
f The filter system may be only be supplied with cold water of drinking water quality.
Improper use, e.g. using the filter to treat water other than that of drinking quality, poses a health
hazard if you were to drink said water. This can be a microbiological hazard if the natural water is
contaminated by microbes. The hazard can also be caused by high concentrations of heavy
metals or organic impurities in the water.

f To protect the drinking water, the national directives for drinking water installations
(e.g. DIN 1988, EN 1717) must be observed during all work on the filter system.
f If you are asked by the relevant authorities to boil the tap water because it is contaminated by
microbes, this applies to the filtered water too. If the authorities later state that the water is
safe to drink, the filter system must be replaced and the connections cleaned. Improper use can
cause damage to your health.
f A type-tested non-return valve in accordance with DIN EN 13959 is integrated into the filter head.
If large kitchen appliances, which due to their contamination potential (e.g. cleaning chemicals)
require a higher level of protection against backflow, are connected downstream of the filter
system, the appropriate safety devices must be integrated into the large kitchen appliance.
f Before carrying out maintenance work on the drinking water supply, the filter system must be
disconnected from the water supply. Flush the water pipe thoroughly before reconnecting the
filter system.
f The power supply to the end appliance must be disconnected (remove mains plug) prior to
installation.
I
CAUTION!
f Improper installation of the filter system can cause property damage. Observe the national
installation regulations (e.g. DIN 1988, EN 1717), general hygiene conditions and technical
data for the protection of the drinking water.
f Unauthorised alterations to the filter system and technical modifications are not permitted.
f Mechanical damage to the filter system will invalidate the warranty.
f Install a check valve upstream of the filter system.
f Use only connections with gaskets. Conical seals damage the filter head connections and will
invalidate the warranty claim.
f The appliance may only be connected using hoses in accordance with DVGW W 543.
f If the product has been stored below 0 °C, leave the unpacked product at the ambient
temperature of the installation location for a minimum of 24 hours prior to operation.
f Do not install the filter system near heat sources or naked flames.
f Chemicals, solvents and vapours must not come into contact with the filter.
f The installation location must be frost-resistant and protected against direct sunlight.
INFORMATION!
f For installation and operation of the filter system, the BG regulation "Rules for Safety and Health
Protection When Working in Kitchens" of the "Food and Beverages" expert committee of BGZ
Fig. 3
(BGR111) must be observed. The filter system has been hygienetested in accordance with
Section 7.4 DIN 18879-1. The materials are selected in accordance with the requirements of
DIN 18879-1 and EN 14898. The pressure resistance of the filter system conforms to
DIN 18879-1.
f A type-tested non-return valve in accordance with DIN EN 13959 is integrated into the filter head.
f The filtered drinking water conforms to liquid category 2 in accordance with EN 1717.
f Clean and descale the appliance, e.g. coffee machine, before installing the water filter
system for the first time.
f For certain groups of people, such as babies and those with reduced immunity, it is re-
commended to boil the tap water before drinking. This also applies to filtered water.
f The filter contains small amounts of silver to suppress microbial growth. A small amount of silver
may be added to the water. This is perfectly safe and complies with the relevant re-
commendations of the World Health Organisation (WHO).
f During the filtering process, the sodium content rises slightly. If a special low-sodium diet is to be
followed, we recommend that you contact your doctor.
