The rongeur is designed to make high precision
cuts. Inspect the cutting edges of the rongeur
before and after each use for sharpness. Ensure
that there are no dull edges, no deformations
and no rollover on the cutting edges. If any of
these appear, send it for repair or resharpening.
Failure to do so can result in imprecise bite size
and difficulties in nipping bone. Continued use
can permanently damage the instrument.
Do not remove crossbar screw from the
rongeur; increased risk of screw backout
and subsequent device failure could result.
Do not use Cervical rongeurs in the lumbar
or thoracic areas. Incorrect use can result
in instrument breakage and the potential
dissemination of instrument fragments into
the wound.
Do not use IVD rongeurs to rongeur bone.
Do not use IVD rongeurs in a twisting or prying
motion. Incorrect use can result in instrument
breakage and the potential dissemination of
instrument fragments into the wound.
Use Bone rongeurs with care on large spinal
and cranial bone. Make several small cuts to
achieve the correct sized bite. Twisting and/or
prying motions can result in breakage and
the potential dissemination of instrument
fragments into the wound.
Do not use Offset rongeurs for heavy bone
work, as they are delicate and can break
when used incorrectly. Twisting and/or
prying motions can result in breakage and
the potential dissemination of instrument
fragments into the wound.
Inspection
Inspect all instruments prior to sterilization or
storage to ensure instruments are suitable for
use. Disassemble instruments, as appropriate
and inspect for damage. Set aside cracked or
bent instruments; send these instruments for
service or repair.
Note: Do not remove crossbar screws.
Doing so can lead to screw back-out and
subsequent equipment failure.
