10. Press the dressing down firmly around the entire wound to ensure
that the drain is sealed. (see illustration D)
11. Secure the drain tubing to the body using adhesive tape. Rotate
sites for drain to reduce risk of skin breakdown.
12. Connect the drain tubing to the suction tubing from the suction
pump using the conical connector.
13. Set suction pump to constant suction between -60 to
-80mmHg (-8 to -11kPa) or as directed by physician. When
suction is applied, the dressing should contract noticeably.
If the dressing does not contract, the system may not be closed.
Inspect the dressing and reseal if necessary. If problem persists,
troubleshoot in accordance with the checklist below. If necces-
sary, replace dressing.
14. Dressing changes are recommended every 48 hours unless
otherwise directed by physician.
15. Routinely check that the vacuum level is set as prescribed
and that the dressing is properly sealed. Check more often
as needed.
Important things to remember:
a
Check dressing periodically for leaks
a
Refer to dressing change instructions
as advised by medical professional
a
Check the patient constantly and examine
the pain status for fever, redness, increased
warmth, swelling or similar complaints,
which may occur with NPWT.
