9.4 Safety functions

9.4.1 Emergency light in operation (emergency operating light)
The SHL 300-Ex also offers an emergency lighting function during operation. The emer-
gency operating light does not impair the Ex protection of the SHL 300-Ex. The emergen-
cy lighting function can be activated when the residual battery charge has dropped to
0% or the control electronics are subject to faults. This ensures sufficient lighting even
in critical situations. The emergency switch is positioned below the Handlamp head and
therefore protected against accidental switch-on. To operate the emergency switch, the
diffusing filter compartment must be opened. (Refer to Fig.5).
The SHL 300-Ex automatically switches off before the battery power drops to an imper-
missible level. This function serves the protection of the battery against deep discharge.
However, the Handlamp can be switched on again by pressing the emergency switch
(refer to Fig. 5).
The Handlamp also automatically switches off when the control electronics are subject to
faults. The left, triangular fault LED is continuously illuminated in red. Also in this case, the
Handlamp can be switched on again by pressing the emergency switch. If such kind of
faults occur, the unit has to be sent to ecom instruments GmbH for inspection.
With the emergency light activated, the control electronics are bypassed. Any active
flashing or dimmer functions are deactivated. The emergency light produces a brightness
of approx. 0% - 2%, which gradually decreases with the battery power. If the emergen-
cy operating light is used, the unit has to be removed from the Ex area with immediate
effect.
If the emergency lighting was activated due to an insufficient battery charge, please im-
mediately re-charge the Handlamp outside the Ex area. Make sure to deactivate emer-
gency lighting before re-charging.

9.4.2 Emergency lighting, stationary (backup electronics)

The Handlamp features in connection with the charging station a special emergency
lighting function. If the emergency light is operated together with the vehicle charging
station, the emergency light may be activated when the lower nominal voltage limit is
exceeded, which results in an accidental battery discharge. For vehicle operation, this
function can be deactivated by the factory.
The emergency lighting function is activated by inserting the Handlamp in the ON state in
the charger. When charging voltage is applied, the Handlamp is automatically set to the
emergency light mode. The LEDs are switched off. The emergency light can be used both
as continuous and as flashing light (switch position 3). Exception: Switch position (50%
light). In this position, the torch is set to continuous light with approx. 2% brightness
when being inserted in the charging station. With sufficient/applied line voltage, the torch
is simultaneously charged. The charging process then takes proportionately longer.
44
If the charger is subject to a power failure, the emergency light is activated. The emergen-
cy light has a brightness of approx. 2%. This way, continuous emergency lighting can be
assured over a long period of time. As the torch can be variably positioned in the charger,
the emergency light can be optimally aligned. Please also refer to the schematic function
overview in Section 9.4.5.

9.4.3 LED failure

The SHL 300-Ex is equipped with three powerful LEDs with a very long service life. Ne-
vertheless, if one of the LEDs happens to fail, then the operation of the remaining LEDs
continues. The Handlamp immediately switches the remaining functioning LED's to an
illumination power of 00%. In addition, the left, red fault LED will flash. Therefore, even
if one of the LEDs fail, the SHL 300-Ex produces enough light to safely leave the Ex /
working area. In the event of a LED fault, an activated flashing function is maintained. To
guarantee the high safety degree of the Handlamp, LEDs must only be replaced by ecom-
instruments GmbH. The LED housing must not be opened.

9.4.4 Exceeding the permissible operating temperature

In some cases, the maximum operating temperature of the Handlamp may be exceeded.
The SHL 300-Ex then automatically reduces the illumination power to <2%. If this func-
tion is active, the right, red, triangular fault display flashes. This ensures maximum safety
even in critical situations without the Handlamp switching off.
When the standard values are again reached, the Handlamp returns to the original mode
