Fitting the tow bar to the vehicle
- 5 -
- Remove the threaded connections from the openings provided for fastening the tow bar
on the rear side members (on both sides of the vehicle) – see arrows. Then treat the area
around the openings with anti-corrosion protection in the same way as you treated the
EN
points on the body after removing the cross beam.
- If necessary, remove the parts made of plastisol which are located inside the underride
protection.
- 6 -
- Slide the support frame (A) by the side members into the openings on the rear of the vehicle
and position it so that the screw axes are positioned approximately in the centre of the
side-member fastening openings.
- Screw the side members loosely onto the vehicle chassis using the four M10 x 35 fastening
bolts (B).
- Check the position of the tow bar and tighten the bolts (alternately) on both sides to a
tightening torque of 55 Nm ± 10% +90° – see Detail.
Note. If the vehicle is fitted with heat protection shields for the
exhaust system, or with other components which are preventing the
screws (B) from being fitted, these components are to be removed or
bent in accordance with the Repair Manual.
Should it be necessary to remove and refit the tow bar again, you must
replace the fastening bolts with new ones.
- 7, 8 -
- Test the seating of the ball hitch (C) in the receiver recess on the support frame. The ball
hitch should be locked and unlocked using the key (D).
- Then remove the ball hitch from the receiver recess and place the cover (E) on the ball pin.
Place the ball hitch in the space provided in the tool box in the vehicle's luggage compart-
ment.
- Fit the cover (F) into the receiver recess on the support frame.
Proceed to fitting the tow bar's electrical installation to the vehicle (see the electrical
installation mounting instructions for tow bars).
After completing the electrical installation, refit all parts which were removed and tighten
connections, as appropriate, to the specified torques.
Inform your customer about the following instruction.
After having driven the first 500 km (approximately) with a trailer, check the tightness of
the fastening bolts between the side members and the vehicle chassis and, if necessary,
tighten them to the specified torque of 90 Nm. We recommend that you have this check
carried out at your local special service centre.
Operating and Maintenance instructions for the tow bar are described in the vehicle Op-
erating instructions (Chapter: "Tow bar"). If the Operating instructions have been mislaid,
another copy should be ordered from a ŠKODA dealer.
