7.3.4
Bend the fiber to detect
eventual fiber damage after stripping.
7.3.5
• The cleaned bare glass exposed
after stripping should not be in contact
with tools, fingers, etc.
• The glass should only be touched
by an appropriate lint-free clean cloth,
soaked in high-purity isopropyl alcohol.
• The number of passes over the fiber
should be limited (optimally one pass)
and the cloth should be replaced
regularly with a new cloth (when using a
cleaning tissue impregnated with
isopropyl alcohol. Replace the cleaning
tissue after each splice made).
• The fiber should be placed in the
RCAT immediately after cleaning to
reduce the effect of any airborne
contaminants.
7.4 Cleaving/fiber insertion in the
splice
7.4.1
Make sure the fiber clamp lever (10)
is in position II.
7.4.2
Use the width of the RCAT as a
length indicator to hold the fiber.
Electrostatic charge on the fiber may lead to
malfunctioning of the RECORDsplice tool.
Test: move the fiber slowly within a few
millimeters distance to the RECORDsplice
housing. If the fiber is deflected towards the
housing (visible bending of the fiber), the
fiber is electrostatically charged. Repeat
cleaning the fiber with a cloth soaked with
isopropyl alcohol and repeat the test.
