3. Systems and Principle of Operation

3.1 Safety Interlocks

The HB378/HB422 is safety-interlocked so that:
a) the drive cannot be started if the guard is open,
b) the drive will stop if the guard is opened whilst it is running, and
c) opening the guard opens the dump valve so any residual pressure in the system is
immediately relieved.

3.2 Circuits

All the circuits are additions to the AVM2-PC circuits (given in the AVM2-PC manual) and should
always be read in conjunction with these when diagnosing faults.

3.2.1 Pneumatic Circuit

Refer to pneumatic circuit, Figure 3.1. The guard dump valve is air-operated, supplied from the
bulkhead connection on the AVM2 (1).

The pressure regulator sets the air pressure on the dump valve, and hence the maximum test oil
pressure. This is set at the factory to correspond to a test oil pressure of just over 2000 bar.

3.2.2 Hydraulic Circuit

The HB378/HB422 kit is used to enable testing of common rail system components on an AVM2 test
stand in two modes. In both modes, the AVM2 provides conditioned calibration fluid as a supply to a
common rail high-pressure pump. See figure 3.2. A 2-micron filter is part of the HB378 kit and is
added to the AVM2 circuit to provide a clean supply in order to protect the high-pressure pump. The
filter is fitted as standard to machine serial numbers 2285 and above. For instructions on changing the
filter element see section 5.1.1.
Mode 1 is for testing pumps. The unit under test is driven by the AVM2 drive via a pump adaptor. The
high-pressure discharge feeds a manual pressure control valve (PCV) which is part of the
HB378/HB422 kit. The valve applies a back-pressure to the pump to simulate the vehicle system.
Fluid discharged from the PCV is fed to the AVM2 metering unit to determine the test flow. See figure
3.3. Kits for driving a range of pumps and to provide the electrical control signals for the pumps are
available from Hartridge. The electrical pump controls are all presented to the operator via the AVM2
interface and the results are presented on the AVM2 screen.
