10.3 GEAR UNITS
Tracking
It should be checked periodically the good condition of the gear unit (no oil leaks,
good condition of plugs, peepholes, no corrosion in housing, etc,...).
Lubrication
Gear units with lifetime lubrication:
-
For normal conditions of load, humidity, temperature, cleanliness, etc. gear unit
doesn't need any change of oil. Used lubricants, in normal operating conditions,
reach from 20.000 to 25.000 hours of operation.
However, even if the gear unit is lifetime lubricated, in those cases of gears that
may be exposed to dirt, pollution, humidity... it is recommended to perform a
preventive oil change, for example, every 3 years.
Gear units with oil lubrication:

In gear units with oil lubrication it should be checked periodically that oil level is
good, adding oil if necessary. In any case, oils with different quality should not
be mixed. In case of doubt it is recommended a complete replacement of oil.

Usual change of oil
In
normal
operating
frequencies can be followed:
Mineral oil every 4.000 hours of operation or an annual replacement (the

firstly reached value).
Synthetic oil every 15.000 hours of operation or 3 years, (the firstly

reached value)
10.4 TIGHTNESS SEALS
Inspection and replacement
All tightness seals (in manhole, covers, clamps, nozzles, sight glasses,...) should be
checked periodically in order to verify that there are in perfect conditions. If any
problem of conservation is detected, proceed to the seal replacement with a new
one of the same material.
Assembly of a tight seal
In those tight seals pressed by screws, tightening should be done in cross for a
proper and uniform fit in the whole length of the seal.
Assembly of a glued seal
If the seal is bonded to avoid that it can move or knock out of position, when
removing the older seal, adhesive remains in support surface should be cleaned
properly, to ensure that the new seal can be perfectly assembled.
