Using a suitable contact-type tachometer regularly
check the speed of the tool without the wheel
attached and ensure that the measured speed is lower
than the rated speed on the tool. If the measured
speed exceeds the rated speed discontinue use of the
tool and send it to Snap-on Tools Company for
evaluation/repair. In addition regularly check the
flange to make sure that it is free of cracks, burrs,
warping or other damage and is the correct one for
the tool. Also do simple checks to ensure that
vibration is normal. Regularly check the spindle to
make sure that it is in good condition and is not worn.
Replace any worn or damaged parts. Always check all
of the aforementioned after servicing.
Disconnect tool from air supply before installing or
removing wheel or making any adjustments.
Installing Grinding Wheels
Place Wheel Flange and wheel on spindle.
Thread Wheel Retainer onto spindle.
Tightened Wheel Retainer with enclosed spanner
wrench while holding spindle with enclosed open end
wrench. Tighten Wheel retainer to a maximum of 120
in-lb.
Removing Grinding Wheels
Unthread Wheel Retainer and remove wheel.
Air Supply
This tool operates most efficiently on clean, moisture
free, well lubricated air at a constant pressure of 90
psig (6.2 bar, 620 kPa).

Piping System
The piping system should be large enough to avoid
an excessive pressure drop under maximum flow
conditions. All pipe fittings and hose outlets should
be 1/2" and should be arranged so there are no low
spots that collect water that cannot be drained daily.
Do not use an air hose less than 3/8" inside diameter
or one that is too long because pressure drop under
maximum flow conditions could reduce performance.
Accessories are available for airtight connections. The
Snap-on AHC21 quick coupler and the AHC21M
adaptor are recommended for use with these grinders.
Air Compressor
The air compressor should have sufficient capacity to
deliver (30 SCFM) for the PTGR450 at 90 psig (6.2
bar, 620 kPa) at each outlet while the tool is running.
The receiver tank should have sufficient capacity to
provide surge balance for each air tool.
Filter
The Snap-on AHR424 filter, or equivalent, should be
used to assure clean air for the grinder. Water, dirt
and scale act as abrasives, which could damage the
grinder. A filter unit should be installed between the
compressor and the air regulator and air lubricator.
Air Regulator
Regulated air pressure is necessary for proper
performance of the grinder. The Snap-on AHR426
Regulator, or equivalent will adjust and maintain the
recommended air pressure of 90 psig (6.2 bar, 620
kPa). Pressure less than this reduces efficiency, while
pressure greater than this increases torque and speed
beyond the rated capacity—creating potential
hazards and possible damage to the grinder. Check
the air pressure at the regulator while using the
grinder in a normal manner.
Air Line Lubricator
√ Do not use a heavy grade of oil because stalling and
low performance will result.
The preferred method of lubricating the grinder motor
is to use an airline lubricator such as the Snap-on
AHR428 Lubricator. It should be filled with Snap-on
IM6 Air Motor Oil or a good grade of SAE 10W oil.
If an airline lubricator is not used, lubricate the air
motor by injecting approximately 1/8 oz. (3.75 ml) of
IM6 Air Motor Oil into the air inlet of the grinder each
day before using it. IM6 Oil is specially formulated for
air tools and no flushing solvent is needed.
