∙ When is the fruit or vegetable ripe?
In spring, summer, fall, or perhaps even in winter?
If necessary, use a seasonal calendar for this (internet, app, etc.).
∙ Which other fruits and vegetables do the children also know?
What do they know about them?
T
Fruit and vegetables in the "practice test"
Bring in the food that corresponds to several or all of the wooden pieces.
The children match the appropriate wooden piece to each food and
name the fruit or vegetable. Size, appearance, smell, etc. are compared and dis-
cussed in the group. Encourage thoughts about different varieties, which in turn
differ in size, appearance, etc. (e.g., apples: Granny Smith – Red Delicious).
After the children have washed the fruit and vegetables thoroughly, cut
them up one after the other. Observe together: What does an apple and
a bell pepper look like on the inside, for example? How does the fruit or vegetable
smell? Is it juicy or dry? What color is it?
Tasting
Each child gets a small piece. Talk about the taste, the feel on the tongue. ... The
children can also create a favorites hit list with their favorite fruit and vegetable
pieces
Tip: A "hit-list salad" can be prepared with a group of older children.
In addition, a fruit salad can be chopped from the favorite fruits and a
raw vegetable salad from the favorite vegetables. With a tasty dressing made with
lemon juice and some honey for the fruit salad or an oil and vinegar dressing with
fresh herbs on the vegetables, the whole thing tastes even better!
"Test of courage": Many children have misgivings especially about fruit and vege-
tables. Dislikes can be easily dispelled in the group when the children see how
others gladly eat up their "nightmare" food. Stage a "Test of courage"! Who dares,
for example, bite into the mushroom or taste a tiny piece of onion?
The practical check
Now it's the children's turn: Have they already eaten fruit or vegetables today?
And how much fruit and vegetables is in their lunch box? Nothing today?
Then maybe something tomorrow!
One goal of dealing with the food pyramid is of course also that the children take
their new knowledge home and make use of it there as well.
Encourage the children also to have a balanced diet at meals outside of your
institution and to try out new things.
