Knowledge check
Who knows something about the foods?
For example:
∙ What are ice cream and cookies made of?
∙ Why do pizza and burgers belong to this food group?
∙ What other foods do the children know that also belong to this food group?
(Fast food: chicken nuggets, chicken wings, bratwurst, French fries, chips, etc.
Sweets: chocolate, hard candy, cake, gummy bears, etc.)
∙ The children will come up with many foods on their own. Yet how is it with
sweetened yogurt, sweet corn flakes, and granola bars, which supposedly are
healthy? Also talk about these "pitfalls".
Food check!
Bring in various packaged foods from the previously discussed
groups, that is grain products, dairy products, etc. Deliberately mix
unhealthy products among the healthy products, e.g., granola bars, children's
yogurt, corn flakes, cookies, etc. The children should now consider together which
products contain a lot of fat, sugar, and salt, and which ones have less. The label
on the packaging will then be read! The children will notice that many foods that
they intuitively would assign to levels 2 or 3 often surreptitiously contain a lot of
fat, sugar, or salt! They thus no long longer have much in common with their
"healthy siblings" and belong on the 5th level. And how quickly one serving is
consumed there!
The practical check
The children can now apply their new knowledge: Have they today eaten
foods that are assigned to the 5th level? Which ones??
And what is in their lunch box? In which food is fat, salt, or
sugar contained, and approximately how much?
