4.1 CAUSES AND PREVENTION OF SAW KICKBACK
Kickback is possible when the nose or tip of the guide bar touches
an object, or when wood comes close and catches on the saw chain
during the cut. In some cases contact with the tip can cause a
sudden, reverse reaction, raising and lowering the guide bar toward
the user. It is possible that if the saw chain is pinched at the top of
the guide bar, it could kick back into the user.
Either of these reactions can cause loss of control of the chainsaw
and result in serious personal injury. Do not rely solely on the safety
devices built into the chain saw. As a chain saw user, you must take
precautions to avoid accidents while using the tool.
Kickback is due to misuse and/or incorrect working procedures
or conditions and can be avoided by taking the precautions listed
below.
- Hold the handle firmly by encircling it with your fingers.
With both hands on the chain saw, position your body and
arm so that you can withstand kickbacks. If proper precautions
are taken, flashbacks can be controlled. Do not leave the chainsaw
unattended.
- Do not overreach and do not make cuts higher than shoulder
height. This will prevent accidental contact with the tip and help
you better control the chain saw in unexpected situations.
- Use only replacement guide bars and chains specified by the
manufacturer. Improperly positioned guide bars and replacement
chains can cause chain breakage or kickback.
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions for sharpening and
maintenance of the saw chain. Decreasing gauge height can re-
sult in increased kickbacks.
4.2 SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS
- We strongly recommend that novice users obtain practical instruc-
tions on the use of the chain saw and protective equipment from
another more experienced user. Initial practice should be completed
by sawing logs on a sawhorse or stand.
- We recommend that before transporting the chain saw you check
that the brake is engaged.
- Carry out maintenance on the chain saw when not in use. When
storing the chainsaw for non-use for a certain time, first remove
the saw chain and guide bar which should be kept immersed in oil.
Store all parts of the chainsaw in a dry and safe place, out of the
reach of children.
- We recommend that you drain the oil tank before storing the tool.
- Make sure your feet are firmly planted and prepare a safe exit plan
for falling trees or branches.
- Use wedges to help control felling and prevent the chain and guide
bar from getting caught in the wood.
- Saw chain care. Keep the saw chain sharp and well fitted to the
guide bar.
Make sure the saw chain and guide bar are clean and well lubrica-
ted. Keep handles dry, clean, and free of oil and grease.
The kickback may be due to:
- Accidentally hitting branches or other objects with the saw tip
while the saw chain is moving.
- Hitting metals, cement or other hard materials that are close to
or buried in the wood.
- Slacken chain.
- Cut above shoulder height.
- Lack of attention when holding or guiding the chainsaw while
cutting.
- Maintain a firm footing on the ground and balance at all times and
do not excessively lengthen the radius of action.
- Do not insert the saw into a previous cut. It could cause a kick-
back. Make a new cut each time.
- We strongly recommend that you do not use the chain saw while
it is on a tree, a ladder or any other unstable surface. If you deci-
de to do so, you are warned that these positions are extremely
dangerous.
- When cutting a branch that is under tension, be aware of the
recoil force so that it does not hit you when the tension is released.
