5.3 CHECKING AND ADJUSTING THE CHAIN TENSION
Correct
Too tight
- Before using the tool and after every 10 minutes of use, you should
check the chain tension.
- Gently pull the chain as indicated. The tension is correct when
the chain returns after being separated 3mm from the guide bar.
There should be no "sag" between the guide bar and the chain at
the bottom.
NOTE: Do not overtighten the chain as this will cause excessive
wear and reduce guide bar and chain life.
NOTE: When the chain is new, check the tension frequently (after
unplugging the machine from the mains) during the first 2 hours of
use as the new chain stretches slightly.
5.4 FILLING THE OIL TANK
- Remove the oil cap and fill the reservoir with recommended chain
oil. You will be able to see the oil level on the oil level gauge.
Put the oil cap back on
- Turn off the chain saw and periodically check the oil level indica-
tor, if it is below a quarter of its total, disconnect the chain saw
from the power supply and fill the tank.
5.5 AUTOMATIC SAW BRAKE
- This tool incorporates an automatic brake that stops the chain
in less than a thousandth of a second each time you release the
rear trigger or kickback occurs. Check chain brake operation before
each use.
5.6 HOW TO ADJUST THE CHAIN BRAKE
- Make sure that the tool is disconnected from the power supply.
- Pull back the front guard/brake assembly from the saw.
The tool is now ready for use.
5.7 HOW THE CHAIN BRAKE WORKS
In the event of a kickback, your left hand contacts the front guard,
pushing it forward into the workpiece, bringing the tool to a stop
in a millisecond.
5.8 HOW TO CHECK THE CHAIN BRAKE
- Hold the tool firmly with both hands on a firm surface - make sure
the chain is clear of the ground and start the machine.
Too loose
- Rotate your left hand forward around the front handle so that
the back of your hand contacts the front guard, pushing it forward
toward the workpiece.
- Now the chain should stop in a few fractions of a second.
To reset after using the front guard/chain brake assembly:
- Follow the instructions in "How to adjust the chain brake".
NOTES:
It will not be possible to start the tool if the front guard/chain brake
is not in the "ON" position.
Do not start the tool again until you have heard that the motor has
completely stopped.
If the chain does not stop immediately, this may indicate that its
tension needs to be adjusted (see: "Installing the guide bar and
chain").
5.9 HOW TO TURN ON THE TOOL
- Hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands.
Press the ON/OFF switch to start.
Don't force the tool - let it work at its own pace.
It will do a better and safer job at the speed at which it was desig-
ned. Excessive force will stretch the chain.
If the saw chain or guide bar binds:
- Turn off the tool.
- Disconnect the tool from the power outlet.
- Open the cut with wedges to decrease the pressure on the guide
bar. Do not try to pull the chain saw loose. Start a new cut.
