FlexFilter EX and ATEX
Area classification
All FlexFilter EX are marked with the
are category 3D equipment according to directive
2014/34/EU . This means that models with the EX
symbol may be placed in areas classified as zone 22
according to directive 1999/92/EC .
Area extension
If the FlexFilter EX is used to collect combustible dust,
the area surrounding the outlet of the collected mate-
rial is to be considered as an "EX-area" according to
the Directive 1999/92/EC .
This means that the area surrounding the outlet should
be classified as an EX zone. The extent and type
of zone depends on many different factors such as
ventilation, feed out frequency, design of the collecting
container etc .
It lies within the responsibility of the customer/end-user
to determine, develop proper documentation and mark
this area according to the Directive 1999/92/EC .
As a general rule improving ventilation and imple-
menting regular routines for cleaning will minimize the
extent of the EX area and reduce classification of the
zone.
Picture no . 2 shows a general example of how the EX-
area extends around the FlexFilter EX .
Category limit
The function of the FlexFilter EX is to be a part of an
extraction system . Even if the FlexFilter EX with
symbol is category 3D equipment for use in zone 22, it
can be used with piping system internally classified as
zone 20 or 21.
The internal side of the FlexFilter is generally classified
as zone 20 or 21.
As there is no internal ignition source inside the
FlexFilter EX, the inside is to be considered as simple
filter/silo and does not fall under the scope of the direc-
tive 2014/34/EU*

Permitted materials
It is of outmost importance to know the properties of
the extracted material .
symbol and
The FlexFilter EX is intended to be a part of an ex-
traction system collecting material with the following
properties:
MIE: See the product identification plate.
MIT: See the product identification plate.
Kst: See the product identification plate.
Pmax: See the product identification plate.
Materials with properties not given withing the above
stated values must be investigated prior to use with the
FlexFilter EX . Contact Nederman for technical support
and Dust application investigation .
WARNING! Do not collect items that may
cause ignition or blocking . It is strictly pro-
hibited to collect material that can undergo
dangerous chemical or thermal reactions
and/or self-ignite .
Note! Some materials may undergo chemical reac-
tions in combination with humidity/water . Such humid-
ity may, for example, form if the humidity in the extract-
ed air is condensed in the filter.
WARNING! Do not make any changes to this
product without consulting Nederman . Adding
a relief duct or changing the spacing or length
of filter elements affects the calculations ac-
cording to EN 14491 .
Atex components
The FlexFilter EX comes equipped with several electri-
cal and mechanical components which fall under the
scope of the ATEX directive 2014/34/EU .
To maintain the high level of safety with regards to the
product classification, the individual ATEX compo-
nents of the FlexFilter EX should not be altered or tam-
pered with. Components, such as solenoids, magnetic
sensors and terminal box must be maintained accord-
ing to their respective component manual . Chapter
"Electrical installation" contains further information
regarding the ATEX approved terminal box .
