Introduction
Thank you for having purchased our product. Please read instruc-
tions on use in this manual as well as the safety rules given in
the attached booklet and follow them carefully to get the best per-
formance from the equipment and be sure that the parts have the
longest service life possible. This manual will show you the best
way to do any maintenance jobs or repairs eventually needed by
your equipment to resolve any eventual problems, we do however
recommend our customers to arrange to have maintenance and
eventual repairs done at our servicing centres as they have the
right equipment and the highly qualified personnel is constantly
updated. All our machinery and systems are subject to continual
development. We must therefore reserve the right to modify their
construction and properties.
Description
MULTI-FUNCTION INVERTER GENERATOR FOR MIG-MAG,
MMA, and TIG WELDING
The CONVEX basic series of multi-function equipments are char-
acterised by cutting edge, attractive design combined with latest
generation inverter technology and digital welding control. Inno-
vative, technologically advanced, robust, and easy to use, they
can be used for very high quality welding in MIG-MAG, using elec-
9
trodes, and in TIG with "Lift" type ignition, and they represent the
best solution for all industrial fields and all specialist welding pur-
9
poses that call for high precision and repeatable results. CONVEX
9
basic equipments are ideal for anyone looking for an innovative
welding machine that is modern as well as being ready-to-use
9
and similar to traditional welding machines when it comes to set-
ting parameters.
9
They come in a version with a separate feeder (HS4).
These are systems open to the future evolution of technology - the
10
control software can be kept up to date with the latest versions with
10
the help of a personal computer.

Operating features
11
The main feature of the welding unit CONVEX 330-400-500 ba-
11
sic are:
• Metallic main structure with shockproof plastic front frames.
11
• Controls protected by a visor.
• Exceptional characteristics for MIG-MAG, MMA, and TIG weld-
13
ing with "Lift" type ignition.
13
• The welding process is always under control thanks to the digi-
tal setting of all parameters.
13
• BURN BACK control. At the end of each weld, in any condition
and with any material, the digital control ensures a perfect wire
14
cut, prevents the typical "wire globule" from forming and ensures
correct arc restriking.
14
• WSC Wire start control. This arc striking control device prevents
15
wire from sticking to the workpiece or torch nozzle and ensures
precise and smooth arc striking, particularly when welding al-
uminium.
15
• Welding parameters and short-circuits that are controlled digital-
ly by a microprocessor, are monitored and modified in just a few
15
seconds, maintaining a consistently precise and stable arc as
the welding conditions continue to vary due to the movement of
58
the torch and the irregularities of the parts to be welded.
• Easy to use with easy selection, saving, and calling up of per-
60
sonalised welding parameters and programs.
61
• High electrical performance resulting in a reduction in energy
consumption.
62
• "Energy Saving" function to operate the power source cooling
fan and the torch water cooling only when necessary.
63-65
• Remote parameter adjustment directly from HS4 feeder.
• Auto-diagnostic feature for trouble shooting.

Technical data
The general technical data of the system are summarized in ta-
ble 1.
Usage limits (IEC 60974-1)
The use of a welder is typically discontinuous, in that it is made up
of effective work periods (welding) and rest periods (for the posi-
tioning of parts, the replacement of wire and underflushing opera-
tions etc. This welder is dimensioned to supply a I
current in complete safety for a period of work of 40% (CONVEX
330 basic) or 50% (CONVEX 400 - 500 basic) of the total usage
time. The regulations in force establish the total usage time to be
10 minutes. The work cycle is considered to be 40% (CONVEX 330
basic) or 50% (CONVEX 400 - 500 basic) of this period of time. If
the permitted work cycle time is exceeded, an overheat cut-off oc-
curs to protect the components around the welder from dangerous
overheating. Messages flashing on the display will warn you when
the heat safety device starts working (for further information see
the "Fault conditions" paragraph in the manual for the CX control
panel). After several minutes the overheat cut-off rearms automat-
ically and the welder is ready for use again.
