ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
NUESTRA SEÑORA DEL PILAR
ASSEMBLY PACK No. 1
HULL
PHOTO 1. Start by joining the parts that make up the false keel (1) and then glue on the reinforcing pieces (2 & 3). Following
the numerical order indicated in the photo, fit the frames (4 to 13). Before gluing the frames in place make sure that they fit
correctly into position, "flush" with the corresponding slots in the false keel. It is important that the frames be completely
perpendicular to the false keel so that the decks can subsequently be fitted correctly into place. For this operation use white
(carpenter's) glue as the adhesive.
PHOTO 2. Insert two beams (14) starting with the holes in frame (13) until they reach the centre of the space between frames (8
& 9). The purpose of the two beams is to stiffen the structure as a whole.
PHOTO 3. Carry out the same operation to fit two more beams (14), starting with frame (4) and fitting them in such a way that
they come up against the beams already fitted.
PHOTO 4. Fit the frames (15, 16 & 17) to the structure. Using a fine brush apply glue to the area where the frames join with the
false keel and the beams.
PHOTOS 5-7. Draw a horizontal line on the top part of frame (15). This line will serve as a guide for fitting the supports for the
waist deck. Glue the two supports (18) in such a way that they fit flush with the top of the false keel. Trim off the excess of the
support strips so that they are flush with the frame.
PHOTOS 8-9. Using fast-drying glue, glue together two of the parts (19) as shown in the photo. Line the sections of deck (19)
using the planking (20). Start the lining along the straight edge. Use contact adhesive (cobbler's glue). Carefully read the
adhesive manufacture's instructions.
PHOTOS 10-13. Using the wooden handle of one of your tools, smooth the planking down over the sections of deck, making
sure that it is glued firmly into place. Place the sections of deck upside down and trim off the excess planking. Use a sanding
block to sand down the edges of both deck sections. The two sections of the deck must end up looking like they do in the photo.
PHOTOS 14-15. Glue the lined sections of the deck onto the structure of the ship. It is important that the decks rest correctly on
the frames. For this process use fast-drying glue.
PHOTO 16. Glue eleven gun ports (21) to each side of this deck, before doing this check Photo 23.
PHOTOS 17-20. Glue the lining (22) onto the interior of the frames. Glue small pieces of the same strip between the gun ports
and the lining to fill the gaps. As you work, remove the lining that blocks the gun ports using a cutter and then a half-round file.
PHOTO 21. Using a half-round file, make an offset in the lining (22) in the areas coinciding with the supports for the
crossbeams.
PHOTOS 22-23. Continue with the lining until you reach the supports for the crossbeams and then file down the interior part of
the lining and the deck. Varnish the deck using colourless, satin-finish pore-filler lacquer. Paint the lining and interior using red
paint. Before painting carefully read the paint manufacturer's instructions.
PHOTOS 24-25. Cut out gun port blanks (23) and paint one side of them black. Glue four gun port blanks into place at the stern
of the ship on both sides, as shown in the photo. Also glue two gun port blanks in place on each side at the bow of the ship.
Make sure they are firmly glued using fast-drying glue.
ASSEMBLY PACK No. 2
PHOTO 26. Cut the crossbeams (24) to size and glue each one to its frame.
PHOTO 27. Line the section of deck (27) using the planking (26) and then trim off the excess planking sheets.
PHOTOS 28-29. Glue the section of deck onto the structure as shown in the photo.
PHOTO 30. Line the sections of deck (27) using the planking (28).
PHOTOS 31-34. Glue the sections of deck (27) onto the structure of the hull. As shown in the photo, the aft sections of the deck
are lower than the forecastle while, forward, they end up flush with the crossbeam.
PHOTOS 35-36. Glue the reinforcing pieces (29) and (30) onto the last frame.
PHOTO 37. Line the sections of deck (31) using the planking (32).
PHOTOS 38-39. Glue the sections of deck (31) onto the structure of the ship. Where they meet, the level of these deck sections
is higher than the other sections (27).
PHOTOS 40-41. Glue a reinforcing piece (33) on each side of the false keel at the bow.
PHOTO 42. Glue the reinforcing parts (34) into place on the bow frame, with the smaller pieces towards the outside as shown.
PHOTO 43. Using a saw cut out the parts of the crossbeam that remain exposed over the holds. Smooth off the ends using a
sanding block.
PHOTO 44. Below the sections of deck (27) glue the beams (35) as shown and then the columns (36), and fit them into place
below the frame crossbeams. Glue the bulwarks (37 & 38), up against the frames.
PHOTO 45. Sand down the sections of deck using fine-grain sandpaper and then apply colourless, satin-finish pore-filler
lacquer.
PHOTO 46. Take the parts (39), sand them down and paint one of the sides using the same red paint as before.
PHOTO 47. Glue the bulwarks (39) onto the quarter deck and up against the frames as shown in the photo.
PHOTOS 48-49. Paint the inside surface using the same red paint as for the rest of the bulwarks.
