Correcting the carburetor setting
for high altitudes (mountains)
The setting may have to be marginally
corrected if the engine performance is
unsatisfactory at high altitudes.

Check the standard setting
:
Let the engine warm up
:
Turn the low speed adjusting
screw (L) clockwise (leaner setting)

Adjusting the idle speed
:
The idle speed adjusting screw (LA)
must usually also be adjusted
whenever the low speed adjusting
screw (L) has been adjusted.
Engine stops when idling
:
Set to standard setting
:
Slowly turn the idle speed adjusting
screw (LA) clockwise until the
abrasive wheel begins to move –
then back off the idle speed
adjusting screw 1/4 turn
Abrasive wheel moves when engine
idles
:
Set to standard setting
:
Turn the idle speed adjusting
screw (LA) counterclockwise
until the abrasive wheel stops –
then continue in the same direction
for 1/4 turn.
Speed is erratic when idling, poor
acceleration
The idle setting is too lean (e.g. at low
ambient temperatures):
:
Turn the low speed adjusting
screw (L) counterclockwise until the
engine runs smoothly and
accelerates correctly

Spark arresting screen*
in the muffler
The spark arresting screen in the muffler
must be checked if engine performance
deteriorates.
:
Undo screws (1) and remove
cover (2)
:
Remove spark arresting screen (3)
:
Clean the soiled spark arresting
screen
:
The screen must be replaced if it is
damaged or if there is a severe
build-up of carbon
:
Refit the spark arresting screen –
fit the cover
