LIFESPAN, OBSOLESCENCE AND COMPONENT INSPECTION
In any event, retire a [slaice]
service:
if doubts arise about abrasion damage or any other damage to materials or physical
properties;
if the sheath/cover has been damaged;
if the stitching has been damaged;
if it has already been used to arrest a fall.
HARDWARE
Generic inspection criteria: Inspect hardware products for deformation, cracks, corrosion and
marks arising from abrasion, impacts or cuts. Check all surfaces of products, both the inside and
outside. Move/remove constriction bands to allow all of the product to be inspected. All compo-
nents must be present, functional and in good condition. Check that moving parts function cor-
rectly. Abrasion of the anodised surface colour highlights areas experiencing material loss.
Reject if there is a loss or modification of material
Rivets. Check that rivet heads are fully intact. Check for cracks in rivets and in the components
that have been joined by rivets.
Load points. Check for physical damage e.g. deformation, material folding or material loss
through abrasion. Reject if there is a loss or modification
Karabiner Locking Mechanisms. Check that all components function correctly e.g. spring ac-
tion and barrel rotation. Nose and nose slot must engage cleanly.
Corrosion Damage. Corrosion of aluminium products can lead to significant degradation. Qua-
rantine and clearly label all components suspected to have corrosion damage so that they cannot
be used accidentally. Contact manufacturer with full details. Only return to service after written
approval by the manufacturer.
Maintenance and lubrication. Regular cleaning and lubrication is necessary to maintain correct
function. Follow manufacturer guidance.
Obsolescence. A product may be deemed obsolete because of one or more of the following:
at the end of product lifespan;
through a change in legislation, standards or approved work practices;
poor compatibility with other elements of a system.
