My tester displays link errors or erroneous data.
I
f your tool displays link errors (flashing 8888) when you are trying to read or erase
codes, check the following:
• Make sure the cable is properly connected to the diagnostic connector.
• Verify ignition key is ON and not in the accessories position.
• Examine the terminals on the diagnostic connector closely. Check for
cracked or recessed terminals, or for any substance covering the terminals
that could prevent a good electrical connection.
• Verify that the vehicle you are testing is OBD II compliant vehicle. Just
because it has the OBD II J1962 DLC does not mean the vehicle is
OBD II compliant. Likewise just because the dealer tool works does not
make it an OBD II compliant vehicle.
• Verify continuity between the diagnostic connector wiring and the vehicle's
PCM. In an extreme case there may be a broken wire.
• Check the vehicle's PCM for a blown PCM fuse. The PCM fuse may be
located on the fuse block in the passenger compartment. If the fuse is
blown, the vehicle's PCM cannot transmit data.
• Make sure the vehicle's PCM has a good ground. If your vehicle's PCM has a
ground going directly to the computer's case, clean up this connection and
apply a conductive grease to the mating surfaces.
• As a last resort, the vehicle's PCM may be defective. Check the vehicle
service manual for the proper procedure for testing the PCM.
My tester fails Self-Tests.
If your OBD II Diagnostic Tester fails the Self-Tests, contact Actron's
technical support personal at 1-800-ACTRON-7.
