Characteristics

Micropulse transducers are charac-
terized by:
High resolution, repeatability,
and linearity
– Insensitive to shock, vibration,
contamination, and noise
Absolute output signal
– Automatic signal regulation
– 100 % adjusting range
– Removable calibration unit
– 2 kHz update rate
– Error-Information on an output signal
– Pressure rated to 250 bar
– Protected to IP 67 per IEC 60529

Function

Depending on the model, this
Micropulse transducer may contain
2 or 3 independent measuring
units. This redundant feature
makes this model particularly suit-
able for safety applications.
The transducer contains the tubular
waveguides enclosed by an outer
stainless steel rod. A magnet at-
tached to the moving member of

Installation options

When possible, use non-magnetiz-
able material for attaching the
transducer and magnet ring.

When attaching the transducer to
magnetizable materials, appro-
priate measures must be taken to
protect against magnetic disturb-

the machine or to the cylinder pis-
ton is moved over the rod and its
position constantly updated.
The magnet defines the measured
position on the waveguides. An
internally generated INIT pulse in-
teracts with the magnetic field of
the magnet to generate a magneto-
strictive torsional wave in each
waveguide which propagates at
ultrasonic speed.
The torsional wave arriving at the
end of the waveguide is absorbed
in the damping zone. The wave
arriving at the beginning of the
waveguide creates an electrical
signal in the coil surrounding the
waveguide. The propagation time of
the wave is used to derive the posi-
tion. Depending on the version the
corresponding value is output as a
voltage or a current either with rising
or falling characteristic. This pro-
cess takes place with measuring
high precision and repeatability
within the stroke range defined as
nominal stroke length. Depending
on the model, this output signal
may be provided on 2 or 3 indepen-
dent, redundant lines.

At the rod end is a damping zone,
within which no reliable signal is
available, but which may be en-
tered by the magnet.
The electrical connections be-
tween the individual measuring
units, the controller and the power
supply are made through cables
connected to the electronics hous-
ing.

Available nominal stroke
lengths and magnet ring
To assure flexibility for different
applications, a wide range of nomi-
nal stroke lengths in the following
increments are available:
from 25 to 500 mm every 25 mm,
from 500 to 1000 mm every 50 mm,
other stroke lengths on request.
Magnet ring must be ordered sepa-
rately.
