ATEX safety notes (continued)
The applicable safety regulations and standard
requirements must be observed during selection, set-up,
and operation, such as:
Requirements for occupational safety
Requirements for explosion protection
Electrical installations erection in explosive
atmospheres (DIN EN 60079-14)
Ignition protection "d", flameproof enclosure
Ignition protection "e", increased safety
Special requirements for equipment in device group II,
category 1G
Special conditions for safe operation (X)
More detailed information on the guidelines,
approvals, and standards is included in the
declaration of conformity.

Use and inspection

2.4.1

Device category and suitability

The BTL as a piece of equipment is divided into Equipment
Category II, i.e. for all explosion hazard areas except for
potentially explosive areas with the exception of mine
workings susceptible to firedamp. It may be used in gas
and dust explosive areas in accordance with the
following descriptions.
Gas explosion protection
Device category II 1/2 G covers devices that have been
designed to ensure the required amount of safety, even in
case of frequent device malfunctions or error states which
are generally to be expected. Devices in this category can
be used in zone 0 (measuring range) or 1 (electronics
head). Zone 0 refers to an area in which a hazardous
explosive atmosphere made of a mixture of air and
flammable gases, vapors, or mists is constantly or
frequently present. Zone 1 is an area in which a hazardous
explosive atmosphere made of a mixture of air and
flammable gases or vapors is occasionally present during
normal operation. The operator is responsible for proper
separation of zones.
Ignition protection d ensures that the housing withstands
the pressure of an explosion in the interior thanks to a
flameproof enclosure and does not allow the explosion to
be transferred to the explosive atmosphere outside of the
housing.
Ignition protection d ensures that the
device generates no arcs, sparks or elevated temperatures
during proper operation when additional measures are
taken.
Gas group IIC indicates that the BTL can be used in all
gases in compliance with the temperature class.

Temperature class T6 at an ambient temperature of 60 °C
indicates that the outer surface temperature of the BTL is
below 85°C, even if the permissible operating conditions
are unfavorable. As a result, an explosive gas atmosphere
with an ignition temperature of over 85°C cannot be
ignited.
Ga/Gb indicates the protection level (EPL) for device
category 1/2 G.
Dust explosion protection
Device category II 2 D covers devices that have been
designed to ensure a high level of safety during normal
operation within the operational parameters stated by the
manufacturer. Devices in this category may be used in
zone 21 in which an explosive atmosphere caused by
dust/air mixtures may occasionally occur.
The ignition protection type tb indicates that the electrical
equipment is protected against dust entry by the housing
and features a method of limiting the surface temperature
(T85°C).
Dust group IIIC covers possible use in all areas with an
explosive dust atmosphere, both with conductive and
non-conductive dusts and flammable fibers.
Db indicates the protection level (EPL) for device category
2 D.
2.4.2

IECEx certificate of conformity

The BTLs have been certified by Bureau Veritas under
certificate number IECEX EPS 17.0008 X. The current
issue of the certificate and further information can be found
in the "Certified Equipment Scheme" section at
www.iecex.com.
The certificate number is indicated on the part label.
2.4.3

Special conditions ("X" symbol)

The "X" symbol indicates special conditions that must be
noted for safe operation:
The permissible ambient temperature is limited to
–40 °C...+60 °C.
Cable and line inlets were tested with reduced tensile
force in accordance with EN 60079-0. This is why the
connection cable must be routed in a permanent
location and protected against tension and rotary loads
using an additional clamp. Drag chains may not be
used.
