Safety instructions for handling AdBlue
AdBlue is a non-toxic, clear, synthetically produ-
ced solution. AdBlue is not classified as hazardous
substance or hazardous goods and is assigned to
water hazard class 1, the lowest category.
In terms of chemical make-up, AdBlue is a highly pure
aqueous 32.5-% urea solution whose consistent quality
is assured by standardization (DIN 70 070 / ISO 22241).
!
Always observe the instructions of the safety data
sheet for AdBlue. The safety data sheet can be
obtained from the manufacturer.
R
Wear working gloves.
R
Wear protective work wear.
R
If items of clothing soaked in AdBlue come into
contact with the skin, remove them immediately.
Use plenty of water to wash the areas of skin affec-
ted.
R
If skin irritation occurs, seek medical assistance
immediately.
R
Wear safety goggles.
R
In the event of contact with the eyes, rinse them
immediately with plenty of clean water and seek
medical assistance.
R
If AdBlue-solution is swallowed, seek medical assis-
tance immediately and bring the data sheet.

R
Use a universal binding agent to absorb spilled
AdBlue. Dispose of the universal binding agent and
components in contact with AdBlue (e.g. filters) in
accordance with regional guidelines.
R
Dispose of pure liquid AdBlue in accordance with
regional guidelines.
i
Outside of the Federal Republic of Germany, obser-
ve the applicable national regulations.
Warning – danger of chemical burn and
poisoning from ammonia!
An overdose of AdBlue in the catalytic con-
verter may lead to the formation of ammo-
nia. Ammonia has an acrid odor. Inhaling
or touching ammonia will lead to chemical
burns and poisoning.
¶
Switch off the engine.
¶
Immediately provide ample ventilation in
the workshop.
¶
Exit the workshop.
¶
In case of inhalation, seek medical assis-
tance immediately.
2.2.2
Cleanliness rules for working on the
AdBlue system
i
Working on the AdBlue system requires absolute
cleanliness.
R
In terms of chemical make-up, AdBlue is a highly
pure aqueous 32.5-% urea solution. Any contamina-
tion or dilution with water is impermissible and will
lead to malfunctions and defects.
R
To prevent exterior and interior contamination of the
AdBlue system, use clean tubing plugs to close open
AdBlue lines.
R
Remove electric plugs only while the AdBlue lines
are in place. Protect connections from getting wet.
R
Surfaces wet with AdBlue must be rinsed with
plenty of warm water and then dried by using
compressed air. Otherwise, drying will result in
crystallization leading to corrosion and components
becoming unusable. This primarily affects connec-
tors and electronic components.
R
Always use clean tubes, containers and measuring
tools. Never use pressure gauges and test pressu-
re lines from diesel set 1. If diesel fuel enters the
exhaust gas treatment system or AdBlue enters the
fuel system, severe damage will result!
