contours of the shoe-sole (Use the insole as a reference for shaping).
Note: Do not grind the strut at the heel area as this may jeopardize
product performance and strength.
• As applicable, re-insert the insole on top of the AFO-footplate.
DONNING THE AFO
• When donning the product, use the posterior strut of the AFO as
a shoe-horn (Figure 8).
• Secure strap around the calf (Figure 9).
• If necessary, remove excessive strap material with a pair of scissors.
CUSTOMIZING THE AFO
• In case of point pressure at the heel-bone, it is advised to apply
padding under the existing padding just proximal of the pressure
point (Distal calf). Remove the padding and glue additional padding
to the strut before re-attaching the padding.
• For patients with lower activity levels, where the calf piece doesn't
move, it is advised to permanently fixate the calf-piece by application
of strong glue (Loctite 495.) into the calf-piece before attaching it to
the strut (Figure 10). The calf piece can also be riveted to the posterior
strut. The elastic band and the micro-hook and loop may be removed
in this case.
GENERAL REMARKS AND ADDITIONAL ADVICE
1. To shorten the footplate, saw or grind off the appropriate length. Be
certain to buff the edges to eliminate sharp edges. To lengthen the
footplate, use foot insert of choice, and secure it it to the foot plate.
2. To adjust the biomechanics of the foot, the use of a foot orthotic is
advised.
3. The AFO cannot be reshaped by heating. Heating will cause
delamination and negatively alter the dynamics of the orthosis.
4. The right footwear is critically important for proper function of the
AFO. The following criteria should be met when selecting the right
footwear to use with this AFO:
– Firm heel counter – for proper control of the rear foot
– Laced or hook and loop fastening
– Removable insole – to allow space for the AFO footplate with
modifications
– Closed heel and toe box
