5.10 Repositioning the patient during surgery
Make certain that the return electrode does not come off of the
skin.
5.11 Removing the return electrode
Remove the return electrode as soon as possible after surgery. If
it is applied for an excessive period of time, it can result in tissue
irritation. The return electrode may not be applied to a patient
for more than 24 hours.
Carefully pull the return electrode from the skin to avoid injuries.
Do not use the cable to remove the return electrode.

Monitoring of the return electrode by the
electrosurgical unit
Electrosurgical units are equipped with various safety systems to
ensure the correct use of the return electrode. To best use these
safety systems:
• Only use electrosurgical units that are listed as suitable in
the declaration of conformity of the return electrodes.
• Familiarize yourself in detail with the safety system of the
electrosurgical unit. Corresponding information is provided
in the User Manual of the electrosurgical unit.
• If the electrosurgical unit is equipped with a contact quality
monitor (CQM, e.g. "NESSY", "EASY", "REM"), always use
split return electrodes. Using split return electrodes with a
CQM system automatically monitors contact to the patient's
skin (this is not possible when using a single-piece return
electrode).
