In particular, the following should be checked:
The chimney or flue system must comply with the Building
Regulations for heat producing appliances i.e. a round flue
pipe of minimum diameter 5" (125mm), a chimney size of at
least 6" (150mm) diameter, a square brick flue of at least 5
1/2" x 5 1/2" (135 x 135mm) or a factory-made system
manufactured to BS4543 and installed to BS6461.
The minimum height of the chimney must be 12' (4m). This
height should be measured from the hearth to the top of
the flue.
The chimney or flue must be free from any obstruction.
Any damper plates or flue restrictors must be removed
and no restrictor plates should be fitted. Where it is
impractical to remove dampers or restrictors, these must
be secured in the open position.
The chimney or flue must be sound and clean. If it has been
used with a wood, coal or other solid fuel fire, it must be
swept before the fireplace is installed.
Ensure that only one fireplace is served by the chimney or
flue system.
Ensure that the chimney or flue is structurally sound. In
particular, it must not be possible for products of
combustion to come into contact with combustible
materials in the structure of the building.
In some situations it may be advisable to fit a flue liner
prior to the installation of the fireplace. Your installer will
advise if this is necessary.
Note: A guide is published by the British Flue and Chimney
Manufacturers' Association which contains general
information on chimneys and flues.
If any of the pre-installation checks reveal inadequacies,
do not proceed with the installation of the fireplace until
all defects or deficiencies have been rectified.
