of the stove the first few times it is used. This must be
wiped off to prevent permanent stains forming when the
surface heats up.
Daily use
Fire up with the aid of newspapers and some kindling wood.
Place two medium sized logs in/out on each side of the
base. Crumple some newspaper (or bark) between these
and add some kindling wood in a criss-cross pattern on top
and light the newspaper. Increase the size of the logs
gradually.
Close the ignition vent when the firewood has ignited and
the fire is burning briskly.
Check that the afterburning (secondary combustion) starts.
This is best indicated by yellow, flickering flames at the air
chamber. Then regulate the rate of combustion to the
desired level of heating by adjusting the draught vent.
Note! Each fire should burn down to embers before new
firewood is added.
When adding more firewood it is important to open the
draught vent completely for a few seconds before the door
is opened. Distribute the embers evenly over the base and
add new firewood - preferably some kindling first. Let the
firewood burn properly before returning the draught vent
to the desired position.
For best results and to avoid causing damage to the
product, always use quality firewood.
Never burn the following materials in the stove:
-
Household waste, plastic bags etc.
-
Painted or impregnated wood (highly toxic)
-
Chipboard or laminated boards
-
Driftwood
This may harm the product and pollute the atmosphere.
Note! Never use flammable liquids such as petrol, kerosene,
red spirit or similar to start the fire. This may cause harm
to both yourself and the product.
Note! Danger of overheating: The stove must never be
used in a manner that causes overheating.
Overheating is defined as overfilling the stove with firewood
and/or leaving the draught vent fully open. The chimney
draught should never exceed 2,5 mmVs (25 Pa) when the
stove is in use. A sure sign of overheating is when parts of
the stove glows red. When this happens, reduce the draught
vent opening immediately.

Maintenance
Cleaning the glass
From time to time it is necessary to clean off the
accumulated ash from the inside surface of the glass. The
amount of soot which may deposit on the glass might
depend upon the local amount of draught present or the
regulation of the top air control.
Some good advice! For general cleaning, use some kitchen
roll - soak it with hot water, and dip it into some ashes. Rub
the glass with the paper, and you will see that most of the
soot will disappear. Rinse the glass with clean water and
dry completely before burning the fireplace. If it is
necessary to clean the glass more thoroughly, we
recommend a "Glass cleaner".
Cleaning and soot removal
At least once a year, perform a routine maintenance check.
A good time to do this is when you are cleaning the chimney
and connector. During use of the fireplace, soot may deposit
on the side walls. Soot insulates a lot and will reduce the
heat output of the fireplace. To avoid a build up of creosote
or condenced water, it is important on a regular basis to
increase the heating to dry out the deposit.
Cleaning the flue pipe to the chimney
The flue must be swept through the stove's door opening.
All burn plates, the air chamber and baffle plate must first
be removed. See separate section under:
Maintenance.
Control of the fireplace
Jøtul recommends that you yourself check your fireplace
thoroughly after sweeping/cleaning has been done. Check
all visible surfaces for cracks. Also check that all of the
joints are sealed and that the gaskets are in the correct
position. Gaskets which are worn out or deformed in any
way should be changed. Clean the seal grooves thoroughly,
apply ceramic glue (available at your local Jøtul dealer) and
press the gasket well into place. The joint will be dry after
a brief period of time.
External maintenance
Painted products may change color after several years
usage. The surface should be cleaned and brushed free of
any loose particles before new Jøtul stove paint is applied.
Enamelled products must only be cleaned with a clean, dry
cloth. Do not use water and soap. Any stains can be removed
with a cleaning fluids (Oven cleaner etc.).
