3.2 Workpiece and joint
With different material thicknesses, the thin-
ner workpiece must be on the die side. The
thinner workpiece determines the maximum
shear strength, see Shear forces [} 19].
The joint can be created in two directions.
For this, the punch and die must be aligned
appropriately in the machine, see Turning
the joint
[} 315].

Depending on the thickness and tensile
strength of the material, different shear
forces are achieved.
The maximum shear strength is achieved if
both materials have the same strength and
tensile strength.
