Preparation for applying manual metal arc welding (MMA/SMAW)
Connect the work clamp (ground) to the piece to be welded. Make sure there is a good electrical
connection in the equipment. Remove any rust, paint, or any contamination using a wire brush or
polisher (grinder, angle grinder) before connecting.
If you use a metal table for welding, you should regularly check the connection of the work clamp
(ground) for signs of contamination or corrosion. A good ground connection is essential for good
results in the welding application.
ELECTRODE IGNITION
Insert the electrode into the jaw of the electrode holder by pressing the lever on the electrode holder.
Make sure you have proper eye protection (face shield) before you start welding.
Note: UV radiation damage is particularly high during arc start.
To start the arc, scratch the electrode over the spot to be welded in a similar way to how a match is lit.
The 84V no-load voltage ignites the electrode quickly, and direct current (DC) allows the electrode to
melt evenly. If you are a beginner do not expect good results on the first attempt, take training courses
and courses in welding.
BONDED ELECTRODE (ANTI STICK)
If the electrode does not ignite, or the arc goes out while the electrode is being welded, it may stick to
the part to be welded. This situation is detected by the electronic board of the equipment and the
welding current is automatically reduced. This allows you to free the stuck electrode from the surface
to be welded by moving it back and forth.
