Important note
For all joints involving the styrofoam components it
is essential that you avoid the use of solvent-based
adhesives, and "standard" instant or cyano-acrylate
glue (cyano, or CA) in particular. These materials will
melt and destroy a large volume of foam, and the com-
ponent will be completely ruined. Use solvent-free ad-
hesives, such as 5-minute epoxy or white glue.
Using 5-minute epoxy (e.g. MULTIPLEX Z-Poxy, Order
No. 60 3848)
This adhesive should only be used at normal room tem-
perature. The maximum working time ("pot life") of the
mixed resin is about 5 minutes, so you should only mix
up the quantity required for the job in hand. Take great
care to mix equal quantities of the two components, and
mix the epoxy quickly and thoroughly. Apply the glue to
one side of the joint only, and don't use too much. Push
the parts together immediately and tape or clamp them
together for at least 10 minutes. Freshly mixed epoxy can
be wiped off the model readily using methylated spirits
on a rag. Do not use any other type of solvent, as the
solvent itself may attack and destroy the foam and ABS
parts of your model. Be sure to read and observe the
safety notes provided by the adhesive manufacturer.
Assembling the model:
1. Installing the fuselage lining
The fuselage is reinforced by fitting the vacuum-moulded
internal fuselage 6. Cut out the moulding along the marked
line, leaving about 1.5 mm excess all round, then cut away
the tail end of the moulding completely. Trim the internal
fuselage lining to fit, and install the canopy to check that
you can still close the fuselage completely. Trim the in-
ternal fuselage if necessary, then glue it in place using 5-
minute epoxy. Use enough resin to provide a strong joint,
but not an excessive amount. Tape the parts together
until the glue has set hard. You may find it necessary to
push the sides of the lining outwards from the inside to
ensure a good bond with the main fuselage Fig. 1.
2. Freeing the ailerons, fitting the horns
Using a pointed knife blade, cut a slot in each aileron to
accept the plastic horn 20 Fig.2 .Cut the ailerons free at
both ends using a razor saw or a hacksaw blade, cutting
just as far as the hinge pivot line. Score along the pivot
line on the top surface of the wing using a blunt tool (e.g.
the back of a knife blade), and carefully move the ailer-
ons up and down. Apply a full-length strip of hinge tape
Fig.6 along the top surface of the hinge line, so that the
foam does not break at the hinge. Push the balsa aileron
actuator 40 into the square socket of the horn 20, and fit
the screw 21 to secure it. Check that part 40 is a snug fit
in the channel provided for it in the underside of the ai-
leron; both horns must the same height above the ailer-
ons, and at right-angles to them. Apply a little glue to the
balsa strip 40 and the horn socket to reinforce the screwed
joint, then glue the aileron actuators permanently to the
ailerons.
3. Installing the receiving system components and
pushrods
For best possible performance in the air we recommend
using two MS-X2 servos (11 g each) in conjunction with a
micro-receiver (e.g. Micro 5/7). Alternatively you can use
larger servos; maximum thickness about 15 mm. Another
practical alternative is the Pico system "Ein-Stein", which
is a single module containing a receiver, two servos and
a switch harness. However, if you decide to use an Ein-
Stein module please note that you will require a transmit-
ter with a mixer which can be set to servo channels 2 and
3. This is standard in MPX systems.
Install the servos or the Ein-Stein unit as shown in Fig. 3,
and connect the control surfaces as shown
Set the servos to neutral from the transmitter. Using com-
bination pliers bend the final 5 mm of the aileron pushrods
22 at an angle of about 75°. Remove any rough edges
from the cut end of the wire, and fit them in the outermost
hole of the aileron horns 20, working from the fuselage
end. Note that the pushrods must cross over inside the
fuselage. Cut two pieces of bowden cable outer 23 about
100 mm long, and slip them on the pushrods. Position
the sleeves where the pushrods cross over Fig.5.
If you are using MS-X2, MS-X3 or MS-X4 servos you will
need to use the pushrod connectors # 70 3454, which
simply clip into the servo output arms. If you are using an
Ein-Stein: drill out the servo output arms using a 2.5 mm
Ø drill, and fit the pushrod connectors # 70 3455 using
the washers and nuts M2. Select two of the lower output
arms for the Ein-Stein. Shorten the pushrods if neces-
sary, slip the ends into the pushrod connectors and tighten
the socket-head screws 29 to secure them. Tighten the
screws using the allen key 32.
At a point about 15 mm short of the aileron horns 20 bend
the pushrods to the shape shown, so that they are free to
move inside the pushrod duct, and do not rub on the fin
5. Insert the fin "dry" (no glue) to check this. You may
need to cut away the underside of the fin slightly to pro-
vide clearance.
The next step is to secure the pushrods at the aileron
end: fit a sleeve 24 on the end of each pushrod and se-
cure it with a drop of 5-minute epoxy on the outside end

Check that the linkages work smoothly, and make any
adjustments which are necessary. Set the control surfaces
and servo output arms to neutral and clamp them in the
pushrod connectors using the socket-head screws and
the allen key.
4. The power system
The motor is supplied with the cables and connector sol-
dered in place. We strongly recommend that you use the
speed controller and flight battery designed for the model,
as all the connectors will match perfectly. Of course, you
can use different components if you prefer, but you may
then have to change the connectors.
The PicoJet features a pusher configuration, and for this
reason the propeller must be reversed inside the spin-
