3. Prepare for training

3.1 Unpacking and assembly

a) Open the transportation bag and take the Airway Management
Trainer out. During transport the lungs are stored in one of the trays
in the Airway Management Trainer. 12
b) Mount the lungs and bronchial tree on the extension rod from the
trachea as far as possible 3.
3.2 Lubrication
Before training is started the surface of the oral, pharyngeal and tracheal
cavities and the oesopagus should be lubricated with water-soluble
lubricating gel.
In case of nasotracheal intubation the nasal cavity should also be lubri-
cated.
Likewise the tube should be lubricated in order to pass smoothly
through the narrow channels. The accompanying brush can be used for
lubricating the inner surfaces of the trachea and the oesophagus.
The lubrication of the above-mentioned parts corresponds to the natural
moistness of the mucous membrane, thus making the situation more
realistic.
Silicone spray can be used for this purpose, however, it is difficult to
remove and therefore makes cleaning difficult.

4. Description

4.1 Anatomical correct view inside the airway systems
A cut away section exposes the anatomic structures of the tracheal and
nasal cavities. A transparent wall covers the nasal cavities, so that the
anatomy can be seen clearly.
The view to the cervical spine makes it possible to see the realistic move-
ment when the head is tilted.
4.2 Easy access to airways
4.2.1 Head tilt, chin lift
The head can be lifted and tilted. The foam pillow is used as a support
for the head to obtain the optimum approach position (known as "the
sniffing position" or the modified Jackson position). 4
4.2.2 Jaw thrust
The jaw thrust procedure can be done on the anatomical correct placed
jaw 5, and allows relevant movement, opening and closing of the
mouth.
4.2.3 Laryngeal Mask
It is possible to train with a laryngeal mask with the head skin on, but
it can be easier to train with the laryngeal mask if the head skin is
removed.678

4.3 Acoustic signals

4.3.1 Teeth alarm
Excessive pressure on the front teeth by the laryngoscope activates an
acoustic signal.
Alarm switch
The on/off switch placed on the inner side of the tower should be
pushed to required position. 9
Exerting pressure on the upper front teeth can check correct functioning
of the acoustic signal.
