Replacing the Blades
Before performing
any maintenance,
place t he PTO switch
inthe "OFF"
position,engagethe parkingbrakelever, t urnthe ignitionkeyto the
"OFF"positionand remove the keyfromthe switch.Protectyourhands
by usingheavygloveswhenhandlingthe blades. W henservicingthe
mower deck,be carefulnot tocut yourselfon thesharpenedblades.
Removekeyfrom the ignitionand disconnectthe sparkplug.
1.
Jackup thefront of the mowingdeckaboutone footand block it
in that position.
2.
Wrapa rag aroundone end of the bladeand graspit to prevent
it from turning,or securethe blade by placinga block of wood
betweenthe blade and thedeck housing.See Figure40.

Use a 1-1/8"socketwrenchon the pulleysideof the spindlebolt.
4.
Removethehex nutat the bladeusinga 1-1/8"wrench.
5.
Removetheblade.
6.
Toreplacethe blade reversethe aboveprocessand tightennut to
100-120 Ibft.
NOTE:Add a small amountof multi-purpose greaseto the boltthreads
to avoidcorrosionand galvaniccorrosion.
Nevermowwith dull blades.Bladesthatare bentshouldbe replaced.
Thecuttingbladesare sharpand cancausesevereinjury.Wrapthe
cuttingsurfaceof the bladewitha rag toavoidinjury.
Sharpening
the Blades
1.
Setthe parkingbrake.
2.
Cleananydebrisfrom the blades.Keepbladessharpand freeof
build-upat all times.
3.
Sharpenbladesevenlyat the original300angleto maintainblade
balance.Donot sharpenthe undersideof the blades.Usean
electricbladesharpener, a conventional e lectricgrinderor a hand
file to sharpenthe blades.

4.
Replaceany bladewith severenicksor dents that cannotbe
removedbyfiling.
5.
Checkthe balanceof the bladeafter sharpeningby placingit on a
bladebalancer.Do not useunbalancedblades.
6.
If the blade dipson one end, file stockoff of the cuttingsurfaceon
that end.
NOTE:REPLACEBladesthat cannotbe easily balanced.
Changing
the Spindle
Assembly
1.
Jack up the frontof the mowingdeck aboutone foot and block it
in that position.
2.
Makesurethe bladeclutchis disengaged.
3.
Removethe deck cover.
4.
Removethe deck belts.(See Replacingthe DeckBelt)
5.
Removethe blade.(See Replacing the Blades)
6.
Usinga wrenchor socket ratchetremovefour hexnuts,and the
four hexhead capscrews.Removethe spindleassembly.See
Figure41.

THE TRANSMISSION
DRIVE BELT
Several c omponentsmustbe removed and specialtools usedin order
to changethe tractor'stransmissiondrivebelt. See yourSearsService

HOME®to havethe transmissiondrivebelt replaced.
TRACTOR
CREEPING
Creepingis the slight forwardor backwardmovement o f the mower
whenthe throttleis on andthe drive controlleversare in the neutral
position.If your mowercreepsdo the following:
1.
Jack up rearof the tractor.
2.
Placedrivecontrol leversin the neutralposition.
If thetires are rotating, t he neutral p ositionthat sidetransaxlelink-
age willneedto be adjusted.ContactyourSearsServiceCenter or
