2.7 Mode of action in treatment of the upper
airways
Nebuliser treatment of acute and chronic inflammations of the
paranasal sinuses (sinusitis) using inhaled medications (saline
solutions and/or drugs) is subject to particular requirements.
The aim is to apply the active agent through the ostia (connec-
tions between the main nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses)
directly to its site of action, the paranasal sinuses. To achieve
this aim, the medical device creates a pulsating mist ("aero-
1
sol"
). The pulsation helps the active agent to pass through the
ostia and into the paranasal sinuses much more effectively.
The advantage of such topical (local) therapy over oral, sys-
temic application (e.g., in tablet form) is that doses can be
smaller. Thus it can be expected that there is a reduction in the
occurrence of side effects. It also moistens the mucous mem-
branes of the nose.
