The indicated values refer to a single or multiple strand
fence without load. For the kilometre values in columns 2
and 3 for example 20-40 km the lower km values are ap-
plicable for fencers with lower joule values, the higher km
values are applicable for fencers with higher joule values.
The intermediate resistance values in column 1 eg 0.4 Ω – 4
Ω per metre have the corresponding intermediate km valu-
es. For example 1 Ω per metre gives approximately 12 km
(which is an intermediate value between 7 and 17 km taken
from column 2 for a powerful mains fencer).
If vegetation growth is expected on the fence line the fence
length indicated above will be reduced to the following per-
centage values:
• For medium vegetation growth: to approximately 50% of
the fence length without vegetation growth.
• For heavy vegetation growth: to approximately 20% of
the fence length without vegetation growth.
In case of vegetation growth a very good grounding is
all-important !
PART 8: MAINTAINING
NORMAL OPERATING
CONDITIONS
As an animal owner specialized in pasture keeping or an
operator in protection of wild animals you should not unde-
restimate the duty of care.
The following checks must be carried out: Testing the
controller according to the manual especially the output vol-
tage (daily).
Some horizont controllers have incorporated testing de-
vices for the fence voltage indicated by single or LED bars.
This device is capable to recognize fence faults at the cont-
roller, e.g. fallen down fence. It is very important to measure
the fence voltage at the "end of the fence" for example with
the digital-voltmeter or the horizont voltage tester.
The voltage at the end of the fence shall not be much lower
than the voltage at the terminal measured against ground.
No voltage at the end of the fence means interruption of
the fence leads.
Testing of the battery voltage (daily)Testing of the fence -
mechanical state and vegetation (daily)

earth leads with respect to combustible materials getting
into contact with the leads (weekly)
Testing of connections at connection leads, fence wires
(e.g. knots) and earth leads with respect to good contact. It
must be ensured that there are no loose contacts in order to
provide an orderly operation and to avoid radio interference
(weekly)
Testing of insulators, poly wires and tapes on being dama-
ged or brittled (weekly)
Service: If the connecting
cable of this device is
damaged, the manufacturer,
his after-sales service or a
similarly qualified person must
replace it in order to avoid hazard.
Services and repairs only by autho-
rized experts ! Only by the manufac-
turer commanded replacement parts
must be used.
Fault finding in case of not sufficient fence power:
Inadequate earthing - increase the number of earth rods (~
1 - 1,5 m) in moisty ground until the voltage across earth
terminal and ground drops below 500 V (digimeter)
bad ground conductivity in dry ground with little grass
- install an additional ground wire or use a multiwire fence
with alternating polarity (hot - ground - hot etc.)
controller does not operate - no output, with fence or wi-
thout. - Check the fuse - if available- and the battery. If no
success let the controller be tested by a service station
Discharged dry or wet battery- renew or recharge the bat-
tery.Use the battery testing devices if available
Too long fence, especially with electric fence netting
or multiwire fences - check the voltage at the end of the
fence with the digital-voltmeter - the indication shall exceed
1500 V. Reduce fence length or use a more powerful unit
Interruption or bad conductivity of the fence wire, make
knots carefully and always more than only one. The leads
must be in close contact one to the other. Be aware of the
limited life time of poly wire at all. To detect interruptions
on the line check the voltage beginning from the end of the
fence
Unsatisfactory insulators - can be perceived partly by
brittled, cracked surface or broken plastic body - this is es-
pecially dangerous in case of insulators on metal post
= direct short to the ground.
The symbol of the "crossed-out wheelie bin" on
an article or on packaging indicates that the artic-
le and its packing cannot be disposed of in nor-
mal household waste. The article must be taken
to an appropriate collecting point for the return
and recycling of old electrical and electronic devices. Batte-
ries have to be removed and disposed of separately. For
more precise information on disposing of this device, please
contact your local authority, the waste disposal service in
your region or the specialist retailer from whom you bought
this device.
