S4 EXPLORER X-ray Spectrometer
General Safety Precautions
DANGER: X-ray Radiation
The S4 spectrometry system is an analytical instrument with a strong X-ray source. Shielding and
safety equipment guarantee that the emitted radiation does not exceed 7.5 μSv/h during operation.
Read chapter 'Protection Against Radiation' before turning on the spectrometry system. Please ob-
serve local regulations for the operation of X-ray systems.
If it seems that the safety system does not work correctly or the radiation protection is impaired for any
reason you must switch off the system immediately and contact your local Bruker AXS Service Or-
ganisation.
Manipulations and modifications of the safety systems are strictly forbidden!
WARNING: High-Voltage
Inside the S4 spectrometry system voltages up to 50 kVDC occur which are however not accessible
from the outside. High-voltages exist in the high-voltage generator, in the X-ray tube as well as in the
connecting high-voltage cable. In addition, the radiation detectors are operated with high-voltages up
to 2.3 kVDC.
In case one of these high-voltage components is damaged, please switch off the system immediately
and contact your local Bruker AXS service.
WARNING: Danger of Voltage
The spectrometer must be operated with such mains supply voltages only that are listed on the type
plate mounted on the rear side of the spectrometer.
As long as the system is connected to the external mains supply, some terminals of the internal com-
ponents may be live and contain high-voltage.
