Make sure that the end user of the device knows how the device functions and how to operate with it.
Please inform the end user about all safety precautions before he starts using the device!
FUNCTION
The device automatically adjusts its behavior to activities such as standing, walking, and descending stairs/ramps.
Standing
Whenever stance is detected the device locks and provides the user with full support. This allows the user to take
small steps more naturally without having a locked knee feeling.
Walking
The device supports the user whenever ground contact is detected, releases as swing initiates and provides swing
phase resistance allowing the user to achieve comfortable and symmetric transitions at a wide range of speeds.
The device reduces the perceived exertion and thereby allows for walking longer distance.
Sitting down
As the user leans back to sit down the device responds to proportional loading to support sitting down with a
natural movement.
Descending stairs and ramps
The device flexes and supports the user while lowering to the next step. It is recommended to lean slightly
backwards as this facilitates the prosthetic knee bending and, in case of loss of balance, prevents the user from
falling forward.
Ascending stairs
Stair ascent mode allows the user to ascent stairs step over step. The mode can be activated leading with the
sound side or the prosthetic side. Placing the prosthetic foot onto the first step with the prosthetic knee in a
slightly bent position and transferring weight onto the foot triggers stair ascent function. Alternatively, the user can
place the sound side foot on the first step, properly flexing the hip on the prosthetic side to swing the device
through, place it on the next step and transfer weight onto the foot. After the first step the device adapts to stair
climbing and allows the user to ascent naturally.
CAUTION: Always use the handrail when operating the Rheo Knee in stairs. Particular caution is required when
carrying children in stairs.
Cycling
The cycling function is automatically activated after completion of 2 crank rotations and will remove knee
resistance allowing for efficient cycling. The device indicates cycling function with one long beep. When stepping
off the bike, the user needs to fully extend the knee to return to normal knee function. Return to normal knee
function is confirmed by one short beep.
Running
The device provides seamless transition from walking to running. Knee function automatically adjusts to running
whenever running gait is recognized.
