Your instrument may contain parts that, due to wear during use of the instrument, are expected to have a shorter lifetime than the instrument in general. These parts are listed in the User Manual and/or in the FOSS product software and in the Owner's Guide.
General The Infratec™ Sofia analyses quality parameters in grain such as protein and moisture with very little sample preparation. Infratec Sofia is a grain analyzer which is designed to be easy to use, robust, transportable and reliable. In its standard configuration, Infratec Sofia can measure protein and moisture content in whole grain wheat and barley samples.
Infratec™ Sofia Sample Handling Wheel The Sample Handling Wheel (SHW) is designed for the analysis of whole grain samples and consists of a wheel-shaped structure driven by an electric motor. This structure contains four main cell types. The SHW contents are displayed in Fig. 2:3. They are from left to right, a check cell, a filter cell, a sample cell and a reference cell.
The filter cell is used during the instrument self-test to check that the instrument is sufficiently stable for performing measurements. Sample Cell Infratec Sofia arrives with one or more sample cells depending on the selected instrument configuration and types of samples to be analyzed. Reference Cell The instrument uses this cell to obtain the base spectrum.
Infratec™ Sofia Touch Screen Display The embedded software is presented on a colour touch screen display. Infratec™ Sofia Printer A ticket printer can be connected to the Infratec Sofia for printing of last result and stored results. Fig. 2:5 Printer A crossed Ethernet cable is used for connecting Infratec Sofia to the printer. A separate interface is required to be mounted on the back of the printer.
Infratec™ Sofia Installation Unpacking and Checking Unpack the Infratec Sofia and its accessories with care. Save all packing material for later use. Use the packing list provided with the instrument to check that all parts are included. An Installation Report is included with the accompanying documentation. Please answer the questions in the Installation Report and return it to FOSS in the enclosed postage paid envelope.

4.1.1 Check cell Infratec Sofia has an in-built check cell that contains a specified sample of durum wheat. The concept of the check cell is that it will be used as a tool to monitor if the instrument changes significantly from day to day. The specified sample of durum wheat is replaced yearly as part of the Preventive Maintenance Agreement (PMA).

When the analysis is completed, the sample is automatically emptied from the SHW into the drawer and the result is displayed. Remember to remove the sample from the drawer after each analysis to minimize the risk of mixing samples.

Infratec™ Sofia 4.2.2 User Defined Fields User Defined Fields allow additional information to be attached to a sample to be analysed. If available a list of UDFs are displayed. Use arrow keys to highlight the correct UDF and press Select. Select the correct value or sample description.
Infratec™ Sofia 4.2.3 View Details of Analysed Sample After an analysis has been completed and the results displayed, it is possible to view a detailed description of the sample that was analysed. In the “Analyze” view (analysis completed and results displayed), press the soft key View.

Infratec™ Sofia A sample may be classified as an outlier for a number or reasons: • The constituent concentration is outside the calibrated range. • The sample is of a variety for which the NIT spectrum differs greatly from the samples in the calibration set.

The instrument will automatically update the software. The screen will turn off and on during the update. Caution Do not disconnect power to Infratec Sofia while the instrument software is being updated. When the instrument software is complete, the instrument will automatically perform a self-test.

Infratec™ Sofia Flush SHW This function empties the grain sample in the sample handling wheel (SHW) in to the instrument drawer. Infratec™ Sofia Stand-by Mode The instrument will automatically enter the stand-by mode if it is left unused for more than 30 minutes (default). Press the -key to restart the instrument. The instrument will automatically perform the instrument self-test. The instrument can be placed in stand-by mode manually by pressing and holding the -key for approximately 5 seconds.

Infratec™ Sofia Maintenance It is easy to maintain the Infratec Sofia. The instrument enclosure is sealed to prevent contamination of critical modules, which keeps maintenance to a minimum. DO NOT attempt to open the instrument enclosure. There are no user-serviceable parts inside the instrument enclosure.

Infratec™ Sofia Lift the instrument hood to expose the SHW. Unscrew the thumb screw 1 and remove the cover plate. Fig. 5:1 Removing cover plate Thumb screw Brush away dust or dirt in the SHW. Replace the cover plate and fasten the thumb screw until it is “finger tight”. Check that the SHW can rotate freely.
Infratec™ Sofia Cleaning the Sample Handling Wheel (SHW) If further cleaning is required, the four cells and SHW can be removed from the instrument. Caution Do not move the SHW under any circumstances when the power supply is connected to the instrument. This will damage the motor connected to the SHW.

Infratec™ Sofia Caution The four cells can easily fall from the SHW and become damaged. Remove the cells as instructed before removing or replacing the SHW. Gently rotate the SHW and remove the four cells and place them on a stable surface.

Infratec™ Sofia Caution When removing or replacing the SHW for maintenance purposes, care must be taken not to use excessive force when loosening or tightening the bolt holding it in position. Due to the angle at which the ring spanner (10 mm) is used, it may catch and damage part of the SHW.
Infratec™ Sofia Replacement of Lamp The instrument should be well cleaned before replacement of the lamp to prevent dust from damaging the reflector. The replacement should be performed in a clean environment. Hot Surface The lamp module becomes very warm due to the high operating temperature.

Infratec™ Sofia Caution Some force is required to remove the lamp module from the instrument due to dust and water protection requirements. Take care not to over-stretch the cable connecting the lamp to the instrument. Remove the lamp module from the instrument and position it so that its base is placed on an even surface.

Infratec™ Sofia Using cotton gloves, remove the lamp gently from its socket. Unpack a new lamp and fit it into its socket. Use FOSS lamps only (Lamp Kit part no. 6002 6252). Use of non-genuine lamps will compromise instrument performance and void all warranties. If the O-ring is damaged, replace it.

Infratec™ Sofia Troubleshooting The Infratec Sofia is a dependable, trouble-free instrument, designed for many years of service on your farm. In spite of the rugged design, problems may arise that require attention. There are no user-serviceable parts inside the instrument enclosure. Because of this design, we emphasize that under no circumstances should the user attempt to open the instrument cabinet and service any part.
