9.6.1 Guidelines for the use of lithium batteries
Lithium ion batteries are generally composed of one or more cells depending on their voltage rating
(3.7 V per cell) and their charge capacity (in mAh – milliamp hours) generally determines their size.
The memory effect problem characteristic of old style nickel (NiCd or NiMH) batteries no longer
affects lithium batteries, or at least only to a very much smaller extent. A lithium battery can be
recharged even if it is only partly discharged, without affecting its capacity.
However, it is important to allow it to discharge completely every 20/30 partial recharge cycles (so
that the indicator is red, around 25%) and then fully recharge it. NEVER completely discharge the
battery to 0%.
9.6.2 Initialising a lithium battery for the first time
When you acquire a tablet or cellphone with a rechargeable battery, you never know how long the
battery has been in it; it is therefore essential to recharge it completely before using the device. You
do not need to recharge it for a long time; 5/6 hours are sufficient (even if the devices indicates that
the battery is charged after only 1 or 2 hours). This indication is invalid when the battery has not yet
been initialised. The next step is to run 2 to 4 discharge and recharge cycles (as noted above, only
discharge the battery to around 20% charge, not completely). After this, the battery can be used
normally, even with partial recharge cycles.
9.6.3 Charging and discharging procedures
As already mentioned, partially discharging and recharging a lithium battery does not create the
memory effect; indeed it is very convenient to recharge the battery frequently even when it is
not fully discharged. After the first initialisation (see above), always disconnect the charger when
the charge is reading 100%. After 20/30 partial charging cycles, run a complete charging cycle
(recalibration) by allowing the battery to discharge until the battery discharged indication displays,
then fully recharge it. If you do not recalibrate the battery in this way, the charge sensor will become
increasing inaccurate and the battery will lose its efficiency.
9.6.4 How to keep a lithium battery in case of prolonged disuse
If you do not intend to use the product for a long time, certain precautions are in order. First of all,
set the power switch to OFF, remove the battery from the product and store it in a cool, dry place.
The battery must be kept at 40/50% charge (never completely discharged) and fully recharged
before it is used again. Finally, note that no matter how carefully you treat it, a battery will only keep
its full capacity for 2 or 3 years or 300/600 charging cycles!
9.6.5 Recommendations
Keep the battery in a cool place at all times. It is sensitive to heat; for instance, do not keep it in
the car under the summer sun!
Remove the battery from the device when it is charging
Clean the contacts from time to time, both on the battery and the product, with some cotton wool
and alcohol
If you have two batteries, always discharge one fully and keep the other in a cool place
9.6.6 How to extend the lithium battery's life
We give below the information and recommendations from Battery University for extending your
battery's life and duration:
1. Do not discharge the battery completely and frequently; this stresses the battery
2. Discharge the battery partially and charge it frequently. Recharging a partially charged lithium
battery does not cause the memory effect, in contrast with nickel or nickel cadmium batteries
3. If a battery lasts for a short time only, this more likely due to heat than discharge/charge cycles.
4. Lithium batteries must be recalibrated with a full charge cycle every 30 charge/discharge cycles
5. If you do not recalibrate the battery, its charge sensor will become increasingly inaccurate and
the battery may no longer work to full effect
6. Keep your lithium battery in a cool place, do not leave it in a car exposed to the sun
7. If you do not use the battery for a long time, keep in a cold place (0°C is ideal, at 25°C the battery
loses 16% more of its charge than at 0°C) and with 40/50% of its charge (so that its internal
