Subway Model bass Amplifiers, Initial Set-Up and Quick-Start Operating Instructions:
Greetings and welcome to the MESA/Boogie Family! Follow these Instructions to unpack and operate your MESA
amplifier:
1. Unpack the amplifier carefully, remembering that some models may be heavy. Get help if needed. It is always
wise to save the box and packing materials should you need them later.
2. Connect the power cord to a grounded power receptacle/outlet using all pins of the plug. Proper grounding is
important for safety and for lowest noise. There is no need to worry about mains voltage/frequency since the
Subway bass amps auto-configure to any mains voltage.
3. Connect the footswitch (if applicable) to the jack labeled "FOOT SWITCH" on the amplifier using a ¼" (6.35mm)
TRS cable. When using the foot switch, be sure the applicable function switches on the front panel are set to
either the off or the "FT-SW" positions (depending on the model and function).
4. Connect your speaker(s) to the "SPEAKER OUTPUT" jacks on the back of the amp using a speaker cable (16
gauge or larger) with a genuine Neutrik SpeakOn plug. The speaker output jacks will accept either NL2 or NL4
type plugs but will NOT accept 1/4" (6.35mm) plugs for safety and reliability reasons. Set the IMPEDANCE
SWITCH (if present) on the back of the amp to match the speaker load.
5. Set the "MASTER VOLUME" control all the way down (counter-clockwise) to prevent accidental loud noises,
feedback or possible damage to speakers or your ears when powering up in the event that other controls have
been moved to unexpected positions.
6. Set the "MUTE SWITCH" to operate, set the "INPUT GAIN" control to the 12:00 position, set the "TONE
CONTROLS" (and "EQUALIZER" if present) to 12:00, set the "HIGH PASS FILTER" and "VOICING" controls (if
present) fully counter-clockwise. Now turn the power switch on and slowly increase the master volume control
while playing. Useable volumes will typically be achieved with the gain and master volume controls at or below
the 12:00 range. Volume will continue to increase linearly as the controls are turned up beyond this point.
General description of FRONT PANEL features and functions (*note that not all models have all features):
INPUT JACK: 1/4" (6.35mm) TS (tip-sleeve) jack is the input from the instrument or effects/pedal board, use a shielded
TS cable.
MUTE SWITCH: This switch (and its red indicator/tally LED) mutes the audio signal to all outputs except the tuner out jack
for silent tuning.
GAIN SWITCH: This switch (and its blue indicator/tally LED) sets the internal sensitivity (drive level) of the input amplifier
stage.
DEEP SWITCH: This switch (and its blue "tally" or "indicator" LED) engages the deep filter, increasing the amp's low
frequency extension.
BRIGHT SWITCH: This switch (and its blue "tally" or "indicator" LED) engages the BRIGHT filter, increasing the amp's
high frequency response.
INPUT GAIN CONTROL: Determines the gain (and drive level) of the input stage. The amber O/L LED provides a visual
indication of the status of the drive signal level and how much preamp overdrive is occurring. Preamp overdrive may be a
desired tone for some playing styles.
VOICING CONTROL: This active eq control modifies the amplifier's response from a more flat like curve (in the counter-
clockwise position) to a more vintage curve (in the clockwise position) by modifying and shifting the frequency response in
all regions with a simple turn of the knob. As the control is rotated clockwise, the low end and the high end increase while
the midrange level decreases and the frequency shifts upward.
BASS CONTROL: This active eq control is a shelving filter that is responsible for the amount (or volume) of low
frequencies present.
MID CONTROL: This control is a peak-dip (or bell) style filter that is responsible for the level (or volume) of the
corresponding midrange frequencies.
MID FREQ CONTROL: When present, this control is responsible for selecting the center frequency (or pitch) that the
MID EQ control acts on. Rotating this control sweeps the center frequency from lower (counterclockwise) to higher
(clockwise).
