Remove the exhaust exit tube and gasket.
Inspection And Cleaning
1.
Check the inlet port of the muffler for excessive
carbon deposits (Fig. 36). Clean as required.
2.
Inspect the baffle inside the muffler for carbon
build-up. Clean baffle by scraping carbon as
required. Use a piece of wire to clear
obstructions from the small holes in baffle
(Fig. 37).
If carbon build-up cannot be cleaned, replace the
muffler.
3.
Inspect the muffler mounting holes for
elongation. Replace the muffler if the holes are
elongated.
Muffler Reassembly
Installing The Exhaust Exit Tube
1.
Install a new gasket and the exhaust exit tube.
Secure the tube with the two (2) screws (see
Fig. 35).
Torque the screws to 15-25 in lb (1.7-2.8 N m).
Installing The Muffler
1.
Install a new muffler gasket with the old muffler
and muffler mounting bolts (see Fig. 34).
Make sure the extended edge of the muffler
cylinder gasket is between the muffler body and
crankcase.
Torque the muffler mounting bolts to 80-90
in lb (9.0-10.1 N m).

Installing The Heat Shield, Fuel Tank,
And Fuel Tank Bracket
1.
Place the heat shield over the muffler and hook it
into the crankcase.
2.
Install the fuel tank, fuel tank bracket with the
two (2) screws (see Fig. 33). Be sure the fuel
tank pads are installed.
Torque the screws to 50-60 in lb (5.6-6.7 N m).
Installing The Rear Engine Cover
1.
Install the rear engine cover with the two (2)
bolts (see Fig. 32).
Torque the upper bolt (into starter housing) to
50-60 in lb (5.6-6.7 N m).
Torque the lower bolt (into crankcase) to 35-40
in lb (3.9-4.5 N m).
Cleaning
POTENTIAL HAZARD
When engine is running, cutting head is
rotating and other parts are moving.
WHAT CAN HAPPEN
Contact with rotating cutting head or other
moving parts could cause serious personal
injury or death.
HOW TO AVOID THE HAZARD
Always turn off your trimmer before you
clean or perform any maintenance on it.
1.
Stop engine and wait for all moving parts to
stop. Pull wire off spark plug.
2.
Use a small brush to clean off the outside of the
trimmer. Do not use strong detergents on plastic
housing or handle. They can be damaged by
