11 Attaching an additional Lumbar or Sacral Support (included in the
delivery)
If the seating specialist determines that the user of the back requires additional pelvic position-
ing or pelvic support, the lumbar roll and/or the sacral wedge delivered with "The Back" may
be used. Also, remember that these contoured foam parts can be reworked at any time with
standard workshop tools. The lumbar roll is used to increase the amount of lordosis. In order to
avoid potential injuries and discomfort for the user, the lumbar roll should never be used in cases
of fixed or non-reducible deformities of lumbar flexion. The sacral wedge, with the wider edge
toward the top and the flat surface toward the back of the chair, is designed to apply anteriorly
directed pressure at the level of the posterior/ anterior lumbar spine. Its primary function is to
bring the flexible pelvis/lumbar spine into a slightly anteriorly tilted position. This position helps
maintain the natural curves of the spine.
The sacral wedge may also be used to support a fixed or non-reducible, posteriorly tilted pelvis.
For this type of application, the sacral wedge should be positioned with the wider edge towards
the seat bottom and the flat surface towards the back of the chair. This position supports the
pelvis and helps prevent additional posterior pelvic tilt.
For installation of the lumbar roll and the sacral wedge proceed as follows:
1. The back cushion compartment is accessible even while "The Back" is attached and the user
is sitting in the wheelchair.
2. Open the upper snap fasteners.
3. There are three fixation hook straps that run from the top to the bottom of the compartment
(Fig. 9, Item 1). These straps allow you to position the lumbar roll or the sacral wedge at any
height necessary.
4. Insert the lumbar roll or sacral wedge into the compartment at the desired location and press
the hook side (Fig. 10, Item 1) to the loop side around the lumbar roll or sacral wedge (Fig. 10,
Item 3) to hold the inserted cushion (Fig. 10, Item 2) in place.
5. Have the user lean back. The correct positon and function of the lumbar roll or the sacral
wedge must be determined by a therapist or seating specialist.
6. Make adjustments as needed.
7. When you have finished the adjustment, close the snap fasteners.
Now "The Back" is ready for use.

Attention!
Selection, positioning and installation of these or other seating positioning products
must be carried out by a qualified therapist or seating specialist.
Note!
The lumbar roll and the sacral wedge are most effective if they are used with a well-
positioned and properly adjusted belt restraint system, e.g. with a lap belt.
