Cord Inspection Instruction
Follow your institution's procedure for periodic inspection of the cord.
Visually inspect the cable for nicks or cuts.
Bend the cable back and forth at both connectors ends and look for
broken strands or corrosion on the wire. If any of these problems are
found, discard the active cord.
Procedural Use - Connection to electrosurgical unit (ESU) MONOPOLAR
connector
Attach a dispersive electrode (grounding pad) to the patient according to
the pad manufacturer's instructions.
Attach the active cord to the electrosurgical generator unit (ESU) at the
port designated for monopolar accessories.
Attach the active cord to the monopolar accessory. (See photo)
Visually confirm that the ESU's foot pedal is connected.
Read and follow ESU manufacturer's instructions for use for
electrosurgery procedures including but not limited to cautions to use
lowest power possible for the procedure and to follow guidelines while
using HF energy with patients who have implanted cardiac devices.
Reusable Cord Care
When cleaning is necessary, wipe the cable with a mild cleaning
solution or the institutions recommended cleaning solution.
Wipe the active cord thoroughly with a clean, damp cloth.
Do not submerse into water.
Wipe the active cord completely dry before reuse.
Do not autoclave and do not use ultrasound cleaning as these
processes will damage the active cord.
WARNING: Malfunction of Cardiac Pacemaker and Other Active
Implants. Interference produced by the use of electrosurgical devices
can cause a pacemaker or other active implant to enter an asynchronous
mode or can block or interfere with the implant's effect. Prior to use of
electrosurgery on patients with cardiac pacemakers, consult the
pacemaker manufacturer or a cardiac specialist for further information.
WARNING: Burn Hazard. Position the patient monitoring leads in such a
way that contact with the patient or other leads is avoided because the
capacitance between the active cord and the patient may result in some
local high current densities causing thermal burns to the patient.
