3.3 SAFE OPERATION
1. Correct Installation
- This Winch is designed to be mounted on a flat and rectangu-
lar surface
- Do not mount the winch on an irregular or round surface.
- During Installation make sure you leave enough space to ope-
rate the clutch lever.
2. Allowed Operations
- Winches for vehicles of 12v/24v, portable or manual are NOT
design for load lifting, these kind of winches are suitable only
for pulling.
- It is strictly forbidden to lift people.
- The Capacity rated on the winch is the maximum that can be
applied. Keep in mind that the capacity decreases approximate-
ly a 10% for each wire rope layer wrapped on the drum.
- PWLD series are rescue rescue winches to move vehicles, boats
and light loads for a short period of time. It's not recommended
to use it for other purposes.
- Never use the winch to move a boat, vehicle or other object
with persons inside or on it.
- Have someone near that can assist you with the operation.
Make sure this person is out of the way of the vehicle and the
wire rope before operating the winch.
- Don't leave the winch unattended when; the wire rope out of
the drum, the wire rope is tensioned or under load.
3. Brake Capability
- Don not leave the winch under load for long periods of time
- The brakes of PWLD Winch Series are not design to maintain
load in a fixed position, thus they could slowly start to move if
the load is not fixed by other mean.
4. Winding the Wire Rope
- Observe the winch while in operation at a safe distance. Stop
the winch every couple of feet to check the wire rope is winding
properly in order. If the wire rope gets stuck it may damage the
winch or cause accidents.
- If the wire rope is winding disorderly or accumulating on a
side, reverse the winch to release the tension and move the an-
chor point to the center of the vehicle. After finishing the work,
you can unwind the rope to and roll it up properly.

5. Use of the Hook
- Never engage the hook to the wire rope. This will damage the
wire rope. Always use a chain or sling with the proper resistance
for the pulling force of the winch.
- Don't engage the hook to the winch mounting base. Always
use the vehicle chassis anchor points.
- In case of using a tree as an anchor point, make sure to do it on
the lower point of the tree, using the proper slings and shackles.
6. The wire rope during the operation
- Do not use the winch if the wire rope is damaged or worn out.
- There must always be 5 wraps of wire rope left on the drum.
Not doing so may cause the wire rope to come off the drum
causing damage and serious injuries. Make sure of this when
you pull out the wire rope to reach your anchor point.
- Don't slide the wire rope through your hand and keep a safe
distance from the winch.
- It is advisable to put a weight in the middle of the wire rope
line, for in case of a rupture the whip effect will be reduced. You
can use a blanket, something heavy or a specialized accessory
(See accessories chapter).
- Wrap the wire rope properly prevents tangling, if the wire rope
is stuck between the lines that are in the drum, unroll it and
rewind properly. Improper wound causes damage to the wire
rope.
- Keep the load in line with the winch. Pulling with an angle can
cause excessive stress on the winch.
- Make sure the cable is in good condition and the hook is stron-
gly attached to the anchor.
- Never replace the wire rope for one with lower capacity.
- The wire rope life is directly related to the use and the care it
receives.
- When replacing the wire rope, put Loctite® or a similar com-
pound on the bolt that attaches the wire rope to the drum. Fir-
mly tighten the nut terminal. The adhesive prevents loosening
the nut in arduous conditions. Loctite® 7471 Primer and 222
products are recommended Threadlocker®
- The winch is not designed to use fiber ropes or strap.
- Never touch the rope or hook while they are in tension or un-
der load. Even at rest, the winch may have the rope in tension.
