The Rotterdam Palatal Distractor works mechanically like a scissor-type jack, so the distraction
distance per turn decreases the higher the number of turns. The following diagram illustrates
this relationship:
Fig. 14-1:
Distraction intervals
To approach a daily distraction distance of 1 mm as closely as possible while making the
handling as patient-friendly as possible, the following distraction intervals have been
determined, see also Fig. 14-1:

In case of a linear distraction line, a distraction distance of 22 mm should be achieved after
this period (colorful line in Fig. 14-1). In fact, however, only a maximum distraction distance of
19 mm will be achieved after 22 days (black line in Fig. 14-1).
In case activation turns were required during the positioning of the distractor in order to mount
the distractor plates on the bone (see chapter 12 "Intraoperative Procedure", page 35), these
turns must be included in the distraction intervals described above. If for example 3 turns were
done intraoperatively, the distraction must be started as if it was already the 4th distraction
day. This means that the intervals no. 2 to 4 are due to start 3 days earlier in each case.
