Hydraulic Steering Gears for Passenger Cars
DANGER
Steering components are crucial for driving safety! Therefore any work on the steering system should
only be done by personnel with proper training and experience. Faulty work can lead to serious ac-
cidents.
These instructions apply only to the following:
Installing of power-steering gears in a vehicle that already has power steering (not mechanical steering).
The vehicle must already have a RB power-steering gear showing the same part number (punched on the type
plate) as the power-steering gear to be installed.
Or the vehicle must have a steering gear from another manufacturer that can be replaced by a RB power-steer-
ing gear.
2.1
Installation
WARNING
Self-locking nuts, screws, sealing and locking elements must be replaced. If the steering gear is re-
placed due to an accident, the other components of the steering system such as tires, rims, axles, axle
suspension, and mechanical links must be checked as well (even if they show no visible damage). Re-
pair or replace parts as needed.
1. Break the electric circuit (switch off ignition or disconnect the negative pole of the battery).
2. Turn the front axle of the vehicle to a straight-ahead position (the wheels of the front and the rear axles must be
aligned).
3. Check whether the power-steering gear is turned to the straight-ahead position. This means that the marking on
the input shaft/protective cap (if present) must be aligned with the marking on the housing.
4. Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position. Put the steering column on the input shaft of the power-
steering gear and tighten it (obtain correct tightening torque from the vehicle manufacturer).
5. Install the power-steering gear in the same location and position as the original component, and tighten it with
screws, nuts and washers (obtain correct tightening torque from the vehicle manufacturer).
NOTICE
When tightening the tie rods the rack should be counter-held on the wrench grip (do not use pliers). Oth-
erwise the inner components of the steering gear may be damaged. If there is no wrench grip, please
use suitable tool.
6. Mount the drop arm or tie rods on the steering gear (obtain tightening torques from vehicle manufacturer).
7. Connect the hydraulic lines (pressure and return line) using a tightening torque obtained from the vehicle
manu¬facturer.
8. Additional note for Servotronic models: Plug the converter cable into the converter socket.
