6.1 Setting Up
1) Place the wheelchair seat cushion on the wheelchair, making sure it is centred and with the
contoured side up. The valve must be located at the front left (see fig. 7).
2) Turn the valve anti-clockwise to open it (see fig. 8).
3) Attach the flexible tube of the pump to the valve (see fig. 9).
4) Inflate the seat cushion until it begins to arch upwards slightly (see fig. 10).
5) Close the air valve by twisting it clockwise and disconnect the pump from the valve (see
fig. 11).
6) Lower the user down carefully onto the wheelchair seat cushion. The seat cushion must be
centred below the user.
INFORMATION: Ensure the individual is sitting in the desired sitting position.
7) Slide your hand palm down between the cushion surface and the user's buttocks (see
fig. 12).
INFORMATION: You should be able to feel the ischial tuberosity.
8) Keep your hand under the user's ischial tuberosity and rotate the valve anti-clockwise to
slowly let out air (see fig. 8).
9) Allow the air insert to sink until your fingertips can only move up and down over a
distance of 20 mm – 25 mm (see fig. 13).
